Default train and bus passes

I am hoping to travel around South America this summer and I was wondering whether or not they have some sort of equivalent to a Eurail pass because that would be awesome.

Did you ever find out the answer to your question? I'm starting to plan my trip for summer 2008 and South America is one of the possible destinations

Well....unfortunately no, there is nothing like the Eurail pass system in South America. Your travel will mainly be by bus, which the buses can range from "just plain ole transportation" (which are generally uncomfortable, crowded with locals, play god aweful movies, don't have a bathroom...but are very affordable. These are best for short rides) to "ridin' in style" buses (which are comfortable, have a bathroom, provide a meal, play spanish and english movies, offer bingo...and are definitely worth the extra money when on that 24 hour bus ride!) That being said, the bus system is very dependable in South America, and don't forget...those suckers ALWAYS leave on time. Regardless of the "time is a state of mind" thing that applies to so many other things in latin america.

Anyway let me know if you have any questions. I was in South America for about 10 months, mind you..I traveled fairly slowly (compared to most backpackers down that way) but, I might be able to offer some good tips.
