Hey there all, I've made my mind up and I'm going to do a load of travelling in the coming year, starting off in South America (Rio). Now my question is I want to dothe whole, Rio, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru thing but would I be better off booking excursions when I get there or shall I book them now? just been speaking to a STA rep and he told me it will be around 3-4K () for the excursions which is a good price but this is only 120 days!?! Should I be looking at getting there, finding a group and then start planning trips?

I just want to get the jist of what people do and how they organise, do people just buy a RTW ticket and go or do they plan every single detail of the trip before hand?

Last question, should I go with a friend/ group or is it best to do it alone and meet people hopefully?

I imagine booking excursions is cheaper locally and you can do them when you are ready.

Rio is absolutely awesome. I lived there for 3 months. Flights are expensive down there and the buses are really long so if you plan on going to other parts of the world then it may be cheaper to get a RTW ticket. Only thing you can do is decide where you want to go and compare.

If you have any specific questions about Rio then fire away. I am sure others will chime in here as well.

Hey foofiter,

Thanks for the reply, I am def going to do Rio now, I reckon im going to spend around 4-5 months in the South Americas. My concern is do I go alone or shall I find a partner? After reading load of reviews I think going alone would be OK but its quite a scary thought.
How much do you think a back packer will need in South America, mainly Rio a day? this should include accommidation and food. I want to have a good time so if it means I have to save more then I will.

I agree that you should wait until you get down there to book things. You don't want to be roped into doing stuff if something better comes along!

Also, you should be fine traveling by yourself. Just use common sense of course. I was in Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay on my own and was just fine 99.9% of the time. The other .1% of the time I was the victim of an attempted molestation in a club in Buenos Aires, and I was completely sober! (but I digress...). You'll be fine!
