I'll be going over to South America in about 9 months for 6 - 12 months and i would love to do some partying. So, my question is - what is the night life like??? I'm from Australia so i'm used to the standard nightlife of going out to clubs and pubs getting drunk and attempting to dance, but i'm hoping the party scene will be atleast a little different from this over there. What's the standard night out in say Rio de Janeiro consists of?? Do people drink a lot, or is it not such a big thing over there?? I've been told that everyone can salsa over there. Is this true, or are there atleast a few people that don't possess the ability to dance like a sex god?? How tolerent are locals of foreigners, will i be welcomed into pubs as a family member of the owner, or will i be poked in they eye with a lit cigarette and kicked out the door for entering the local watering hole?? Oh, and how easy/hard is it to pick up on a night out?? Sorry for all the questions, i'm just very curious about what it's going to be like.
I don't have a definate plan figured out but i know that i'll be going to Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, and Chile. Is the party scene in these countries good??? I'm open to any suggestions and have no problems adding more countries my list, in fact i need to add more countries to my list.

I can only speak for rio de janeiro. The partying is awesome there, everybody is so friendly there that they welcome you with open arms.
I went to this club called villa show, it was amazing, it was also a little scary because it was in the middle of slumps. it was like inside a big wearhouse. there had to be at least a good 10,000 people there at least. The only reason i went there was because a local took us there. Other than that I will not go on my own. Since you stand out a lot. But it was so fun. Beer was .25 cents in united states money.
I will recommend that you go during carnaval time, that is the time I went.

Wow how did i miss this thread!?!
The club/party scene is amazing all over brasil and in buenos aires, argentina.
Start drinking around 10pm at the hostel, around midnight head to the bar where you drink some more before piling into a taxi and heading to your first club where you dance like mad (yes they are amazing dancers!) till 4ish am then goto another club till 7ish. Head to an after hours club till 2pm then you can crash out and take a nap or head to an after after hour club till 10pm when you start drinking at the hostel again!

16hr drinking stints, 10,000 people in a single club, and 25c beer, sounds like heaven to me, i can't wait. 10,000 people in the one club is insane!!! I've never seen even close to that many people in the one club!!!

I think I can't speak of any clubbin' in Peru, I guess it's the only country I've been to I have not been interested or have kowledge of it's nightlife style, & on Ecuador I don't seem to recall so much but hold on and let me get you all the info, Argh not even my Ecuadorian friend knows (he came to the states when he was 13). . . Let me see. . . Oh oh Guayaquil or something like that I might of spelled it wrong, No but yeah they have an O.K nightlife there nothing too wow but it's good. the prices go around 8 to 20$ for cover charge nothing expensive at all. Over Peru oh just go to... ah I gotta go tell you later.

Rio is awesome for partying. Start drinking around noon at the beach, onto a pub for dinner and more drinks, then onto the clubs or Lapa. Out of control!
