Welcome to the Boards, westcoast!
I've been to more than sixty countries, but many of my trips have been short ones. I've never had a chance to do a true, round the world trip. The longest I've been gone is 6 months after high school when I backpacked through Europe, ending up on a kibbutz in Israel. Of course, that was more than two decades ago (I'm one of Tpunk's oldsters -- just ask Joey!).
So, I highly recommend you doing your round the world trip now, while you're young. Once you get hooked into a job, a house, or whatever, it gets harder and harder to break free of the things that would keep you attached to one area.
Hopefully, within a couple years when I retire from the airline and begin work as a middle school teacher, I'll have a couple months each summer to indulge myself on long trips...
Good luck, and feel free to ask any questions here!
