Hi!

My bf and I are planning a 3 week back-packing trip this July. We have done city breaks, hosteling etc before but this is our first time attempting travleing through different countries and would be grateful of advice from the more experianced!

We are starting in Berlin then going through Germany (with 1-2 stops) to Austria (salzburg then vienna) then on to Budapest, and finnaly thorugh Slovakia to Poland (krakow) planning to interail.

Is this realistic in our time scale?
Does anyone know what supplements you have to pay on top of interrail prices for these countries (website isnt clear)?
Should we book everythin ahead of time or just wing it? and if booking ahead can you book trains over the internet?

Any advice would be gr8!
Thanks

Sounds like about 8 places in three weeks, that's not too bad at all. Average of about three days, but probably you'll want to spend more time in some places and less in others, depending on your interests. In July, you'll probably want to book ahead hostels, as everyone and their uncle is going to be traveling those same three weeks! Not quite as bad as August, but crowded enough. In Krakow, try to get in to Nathan's Villa Hostel - a few tpunks have stayed there, (including me) and it's a winner. Great location. Also, be sure to pick up the most recent copy of the "(insert city here) In Your Pocket" (check www.inyourpocket.com to see which of your destinations they cover) for a compact, thorough and inexpensive local guide. Well worth the inexpensive cover price. Don't buy on line though, it's more expensive and not as up to date.
