Hi there, I am in London and have been for about 2 years (I know long time) and want to backpack around europe (1st time backpacker) befoure heading back down under . I have a list of places I want to see and I dont really have any time restrictions, but obviously money restrictions as usual.

Any help on the ammount of time I should spend at these places (if any) and how much dosh I would need???

(end of May to whenever)
Amsterdam (base)
Den Hagg (day trip)
Delft (day trip)
Hamburg
Berlin
Dresden (connection?)
Rome
Venice
Florence
Prague
Plzen
Cesky Krumlov
Vienna
Budapest
Zagreb
Dubrovnik
Athens
Istanbul
Gallipoli
Barcelona

Also as I will be visitng a lot of places over a long period of time has anyone experienced difficulty finding a hostel in peak season without booking ahead?

Thanks Tpunkers!

Hi and welcome. Well, the *general* rule of thumb is approximately 3 days per city and you have about 20 cities, so approximately 60 days would be a good, rough start. You may find you want to spend more time in some cities, and like the ones you've chosen for day trips, less in others. Another general rule of thumb is about 75 Euro a day, so 75 x 60 = 4500 Euro (about 3150 pounds).

I love your list of cities though. You'll have a great time. You can get a flight on ryanair from Venice to Barcelona!

If you are living in London do you need to do it all at once?

I would (if I were you) look at spending some extra time in places like Greece, Hungary, N. Italy, and maybe Germany....as well as a few others. I'm not much into cities, but some places you really need time to explore.

Hi there!, Unfortunately I have to do it all as my work visa expires on the 1st June and they boot me out on my rear end and have to head back to Aus after that. I knew I should have done a bit more travelling while I was here, but thats a long story!

Thanks for that Kingcrazylegs!

Personally, I like to do generally circular routes, so there's not a lot of doubling back or super long journeys along the way. In your case, that would mean heading from Germany into Czech, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia and from there to Italy, rather than going to Rome and Florence from Germany. Then head down to Greece/Turkey and make your way to Barcelona from there (maybe catch a couple of cheap flights rather than trying to overland it, to save time.) Personally, I'd save Barcelona til the end because it's easy to get back to London, and is kind of all off by itself on your itinerary. Unless it's an absolute must and you're worried about not fitting it in, then do it first and reverse the trip.

Sounds like quite a summer!

Thanks for that! I think that is what I am going to have to do as you are right and barcelona is all alone and close to the UK. Have been looking at Eurolines bus's and they seem pretty good for moving around europe, any personal experience with them please let me know!

Thanks!
