That's a long train ride from Scotland to Dublin, man! If I were you, I'd break it up with a night or two in Belfast. I missed it last time around and everyone else I met in Dublin told me it's not to be missed. d'OH!

Just about any train from northern France to Spain will route through Paris first, but you can try to work out your point-to-point possibilities by searching at raileurope.com

I'd say go to Belfast for sure. I was only there for one day but that was enough time to see a fair bit of place, all be it hurried. Go for a walk along the Short Strand and check out the pro/anti British murals along Shankill and Falls roads.

It will give you a feeling for the city to see two opposing points of view on British rule in Northern Ireland.

I feel like such a hassle! *sigh* I threw in Belfast for 2 days... between Edinburg and Dublin... did some more figuring.. is there a nice city between Paris and Roscoff.. I could stay for a night.. then Paris for 4 nights? or less.. then long train to Madrid (3days)... Madrid to Barcelona(2 Days).. Is San Sebastian worht a stay or a day trip? it doesn't seem that far from Barcelona.. then Barcelona to Nice or another smaller southern French town... ok woot thats all for now.. more opinions.. suggestions... ahh y'all know the drill... or on another thought is this entirley to much running around...

That's a helluva liast! Well, since I usually just travel for weeks at a time - not months - I'm not an expert in this long-haul overland business. BUT, since I'm overanalytical by nature, here'show I'd tackle it...

Divide your inteded destinations into clusters. For your trip, I'd break it down this way:

* British Isles: London, Edinburg, Dublin

* Western Europe: Amsterdam, Paris, Madrid

* Mediterranean: Barcelona, Nice, Florence, Rome, Venice

* Out of the way: Athens, Vienna

First things first - 3 months is a long time, but trust me, you'll be dying to go back. Save Athens and Vienna for a Central/Eastern European expedition. Since you're skipping both Germany and the Balkan coast, those cities are pretty out of the way.

I'm assuming you're going into London. Loop around from there to Scotland to Ireland, then catch a cheap-ass flight back to London. (The time of year you're going, those'll be abundant. We're talking 15GBP here.)

Train/bus + ferry to Amsterdam from England. Check StenaLine for rates - I think you're looking at 25GBP one way from London.

Amsterdam to Paris, Paris to Madrid, Madrid to Barcelona. Follow the coast to Nice, then on to the northern coast of Italy on through to Florence. South to Rome. back up to Venice.

At this point, if time allows, you can try to catch a train to Vienna, then cut back through Germany to Belgium, then grab the Eurostar (using your passholder fare) from Brussels to London. If not, you can grab a cheap flight from Vienna or thereabouts to London. (I'm assuming you're going R/T through there.)

By lopping off the time-consuming treks to points east, you can give yourself time to explore Spain (Seville, Granada, etc.) France (Toulouse, Marseille...) and the list goes on. You have 3 months - immerse yourself! You'll also see your money go further by hanging out in these small places, which by the 3rd month you'll really appreciate.

man! i completely left out Germany! how could I do that.. I have to seee Berlin and Munich... leav eout Athens? eek... I like that plan except for the tplane ticket back to London and ferry to A-dam... will it save me that much time? cause i was going to ferry from Ireland straight to France for free.... when you talk about small cities liie (Grenada, Seville, etc) are these just day stops.. will I need to stay the night... day trips from Madrid?

Grenada and Sevilla are not day trips from Madrid. Toledo might be, but Andalucia is a lot farther away. Spain is a huge frickin' country. Besides, you'd really want to spend more than one day in those places!! The Alhambra in Granada takes a day (at least) in and of itself.

5 days in London with 3-4 sidetrips? (You can easily consolidate Bristol and Bath... maybe Stonehenge & Windsor). You're hardly going to see London itself!!

that's pretty organized so far in advance! cool. But when are you going to see the city of London itself? If you're only giving yourself 5 days to see Windsor, Brighton, Bristol/Bath and Stonehenge you haven't left any time at all to see London. Actually I don't think you can really see those 5 things in 5 days regardless... something to think about. Windsor would be a realistic day trip from London; *maybe* Brighton (but staying overnight would be better.) Bristol and Bath should be seen together but you'll want at least 3 days for that; you could make Stonehenge a day trip from there (it's not a realistic day trip from London unless you have a car.)

And 3-4 days might be pushing it a little to see Edinburgh *and* the highlands.

Hola BL...

Check out these sites for plane flights

www.ryanair.com
www.easyjet.com

This can help you out for those "hard to reach" places..

I think I might take a flight from A'Dam to London for like 30E

Other than that I have the rail pass..

Hey Buddy,

I think it's great you're tossing these ideas out for feedback and willing to change your plans. That's the key on any long trip -- and lot's of short ones, too! Be flexible and be willing to extend time in an area you're enjoying and lop off parts of the trip to come back and see later. You don't want the entire trip to be simply "in transit" from one place to another.

As for Spain, Madrid is a good base with definite day trips to Segovia and Toledo (and possibly others, via train as well). Maybe keep Barcelona/Grenada for another time, and be able to unpack, relax, and appreciate the Spanish scene?

I like three days in one spot...always seems to be long enough to get into the "rhythmn" of the spot, feel like a local, but short enough to allow you to see other places.

Keep firing off the ideas...

Idea ideas... Well I have 15 days in Englad.. or at least I'm getting a 15 day consective Britrail pass... everyone says at least a week in London.. so lets knock off 5 days there... I've thought of Bristol, York, Newcastle, Bath and Stonehenge... but then again I realllly really want to see as much as Scotland as possible.... as far as mainland Europe... I'm thinking of trying to fit Lisbon in somewhere... and maybe southern Portugal.. I have 3 months.. but I'm so scared of missing something.... all suggestions are welcome.. I'm open to anything! and thanks for all the help...
