Default The plan so far

I'm going to Europe. Pretty fucking exciting! I have friends in Manchester. I'm flying in the first week of May and going from there.

The plan so far includes:

Manchester (5-8 days) *day trips?

London &/or Amsterdam (maybe? 1-2 days?)

Paris (2-5 days?)

France (what does this even mean?)

Italy (maybe?)

Spain-- ?? + Andalucia--Sevilla, Grenada, Cordoba, Malaga, Tarifa (10-12 days)

Morocco--Rabat, Marrakesh (4-6 days)

I figure I'll fly back to the UK from Morocco.

I've never traveled in Europe before and I don't know how I'll want to pace myself. I have just under 6 weeks ~ about 39 days. I might skip Italy this time and fill out my days in France and Spain. I also have a friend who will be in Greece most of the time that I am traveling but I haven't figured out how to make our paths cross unless I can lure him to Morocco.

I don't want to spend all my time in big cities and my main interests are eating and "seeing cool shit" so it's not a high pressure affair.

I would love to hear any suggestions re: places to go along the way, places to stay, places to eat, transportation, and anything else that comes to mind.

Thanks

Molly

Hey and welcome to the boards . I can help you a lot with Holland, Paris, south of France, Italy, and Greece if you make it there. Feel free to shoot me a PM with any questions. Hotels/Hostels, shit to see, transportation, etc....
Cheers,
Marc

Welcome to tpunk!

I'm personally a fan of spending more time in fewer countries, and the UK, France, Spain and Morocco seems like more than enough for six weeks (I like at least 2 weeks per country, but that could be just me).

I'm currently in Italy and I love it here (been here for a month and a bit and will be here till the first week of May) but it might be good to save it for next time!

France...all I've considered doing (but plans got scrapped) was to do the southern coast/French Riviera...it looked gorgeous, and fun with lots of little towns to meander around in (maybe do a hike/bike trip)! I'll be doing a 12-day trip to Spain in about a week and a half, and I'll let you know how that goes.

Hey, thanks! At this point I'd love some general ideas of things to do in France. I speak French fluently but don't get the chance very often so I definitely want to spend some time in France other than Paris but what to do?

Cool, are you hanging out in the UK for long? I'm not sure what to do there either but I'll have friends there that know the place. I'm going to try to find some modern dance classes in Manchester, cuz that's what I do, and it sounds like there are some nice hikes in the area.

Thanks, yeah, I don't want to be rushed and Italy seems like too much most days. It's the need-to-see-everything panic and omg-it's-right-next-door observation that make me want to squish it in but I'd like to be able to relax and trust that there will be lots of travel in the future, and just meander my way down to Morocco. Have fun in Spain!

I am currently in Spain. I was living with a family near Malaga and have traveled Andalucia a bit so here is my 1.3 centavos (my 2 cents is getting killed by the exchange rate )

Cut Malaga from the list except as a place to travel from. Cordoba is still on my to do list but just about everyone said it was best to just do a day trip from Sevilla. Granada needs 3 days minimum not only because you have so much to explore but because the crown jewel, the Alhambra, has tourist quotas and if you miss out, you miss out. You have to get up EARLY (or get the tickets online) in order to snag a later time. Sevilla, also worth about 3 days.

If you were headed to Malaga to check out the Costa del Sol, I would instead head to one of the beach towns such as Fuengirola, Marbella (where I was living), Puerto Banus ($$$), Estepona etc.

I recommend a stop in Ronda and Gibraltar at some point (both, just for the day).

I am in Sevilla right now at a youth hostel called Samay which is seeming pretty good to me. In Granada I stayed at Funky Backpackers which I liked. In both cities I have heard good things about Oasis.

It is good that you speak French fluently but I recommend that you bone up a little on your Spanish as I have heard that English fluency is not quite as high as in other Western European countries.

12 days seems like a good length of time to explore Andalucia.

Holy shit, I'm leaving in a week & a half and my plan isn't a whole lot more evolved than it was when I first posted this. I've been flipping through books on the areas I want to cover but I still don't have any specific plans in any location. I plan on reserving some hostels while I'm in Manchester & before I really set out, but I guess I'll do transportation on the fly other than what I've already booked.

So here's the revised plan so far:

Manchester (5 days)

Paris (4 days)

4 days to get to Barcelona with some stops in Provence.

Barcelona (4 days)

At this point, my friend flies back to Manchester & I'm on my own.

10-12 days in Spain -- Grenada, Cordoba, Sevilla, Ronda & Arcos de la Frontera, Cadiz, Tarifa? I don't actually know, this is a rough idea.

Morocco -- Rabat? Marrakesh (4-6 days)

I have a ticket from Marrakesh to London so I guess I will have to make it that far. I am going to meet a friend in Brighton (I think?), see Cat Power in Manchester & spend a couple more days there before I fly back to Canada. I'm so excited =)

Sounds like you've got a general plan which is nice. Good luck with the trip. Mine is still about 2 months away and I can't wait.
