Default rough rough europe itinerary summer 2008

Okay, so this is my rough itinerary (more like a to-go list) for my trip in summer 2008. I'll probably be going in late may/early-mid june (depends on when graduation is). I want to stay at least a month, but if money permits, I'm willing to stay until after my 18th birthday (August 11th, 2008). Haha, yes, I know I'm going in the peak season. It's whatev. I'll meet new people :)
  • Portugal
    • Lisboa (staying with relatives--maybe a week or so?)
      • Castle of St. George
      • Sintra (Monserrate gardens)
      • Cabo da Roca
      • Monastary of Batalha
    • Porto (a few days, I'm thinking)
  • Spain
    • Madrid (a few days)
      • Parque del Buen Retiro
  • France
    • Paris (maybe a week, at least in the area, maybe not all in the city)
  • Italy
    • Rome
    • Florence
    • Venice
  • U.K.
    • London
    • Stonehenge?
This is a very very very bare minimum list. Do you guys have any suggestions for places to go/see within these countries? Or nearby countries I should think about seeing? I'm really into old buildings, art, churches... old things in general. I like history.

And I like small towns. I really just want to go to a random small village in the middle of France and hang out there for a week. Or maybe Spain. Mmm, any suggestions welcome :)

Madrid is a great place to explore small(er) towns. Salamanca was a favorite for me as was Avila. I definitely recommend you go to Andalucia (Granada, Sevilla, Malaga, Ronda, Cordoba etc) and that you spend your time in el parque del buen retiro during the day as it is usually a sketchy area after dark.

In Italy, you may want to consider Naples and for smaller towns, Sienna, Umbria, Cortona and Lucca.

The Alhambra in Granada, the Cathedral and the Plaza de Espana in Sevilla, the Plaza Mayor in Salamanca (at night) are musts. As are the usual suspects for Rome. I would try to read Angels and Demons by Dan Brown before visiting Rome if you liked the Da Vinci Code at all.

Thanks, Joe! :) I'm about to go to work, so I'll read some more about those towns later on, and add the ones I like to my itinerary. I already read Angels & Demons, but thanks anyway :) I think I may reread the Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons... He name drops like crazy, and I'd love to see some of the things he describes....

I would have to agree with Joe on Napoli!!! Everyone should experience the craziynessssss of Napoli., Easy day trips down the Amalfi Coast, Ferry's to the islands etc... I've stayed 2 different places in Napoli if you need suggestions. As for finding a cool little city to hang out in. I tell everyone to go to Ischia Island off the coast of Napoli. I could spend a month there easily. Anyway, the ferry leaves from Porto Beverrello, Napoli. The best hostel there called The Ring Hostel. Its in Forio city on Ischia.....
