Like everyone else...I Booked my Plane ticket!!
I think this seems to be a trend here...hehe..
Well I too am heading out fairly soon (after two long years since I've been back home). I am now piss broke, but I have a plane ticket so that is all that matters. I leave Sept 2 for Bangkok. (I have the worst flight path..vancouver-san francisco-hong kong-singapore-bangkok...SERIOUSLY!) I will be spending three months in SEA. Visiting Myanmar (thanks mike for inspiration!), Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, malaysia, Singapore....Then in December I will fly out of Singapore and fly to Auckland. i will then spend the next 9-12 months living/working /travelling New Zealand. I already have my working visa so that is good to go. Hopefully after NZ I will get to spend a couple months in Central America but that is subject to my money situation!! Anyways that is my plane ..So if anybody is is in or going to be travelling to NZ or SEA let me know and we could try to meet up.

Yeah it's such horrible connections. But i've been looking at hotels in bangkok. i think i'm going to splurge and get a really nice room for a couple nights. Theres this hotel called Lebua at the State Tower that has an early bird special. One bedroom suite, 4 star hotel for only $130 CAD not bad....After that kind of travel I think I'll deserve it!
Teri. You better start saving!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds awesome Jill. Keep us posted. You will LOVE Asia.
So....yeah....your flight path is horrendous...what's up with that? What airlines are you flying? Can't you at least fly direct from Hong Kong to Bangkok? There are lots of flights, even if you have to grab your bags and re-check them it might be worth it. Emirates and Cathay Pacific usually have cheap flights at night. Thai is another option. Singapore is actually south of Bangkok, so you are actually flying past your destination, and then flying back north and that kind of stinks (and you probably realize that already, but just in case I thought I would point it out).
As an alternative, have you thought about doing a 1 or 2 day stop over in Hong Kong to break up the trip? There are a couple of hostels around, and the city really is worth a day or two of exploring in my opinion (though it is rather pricey). Plus, Lan Kwai Fong is a great nightlife area, lot's of fun.
Anyway, enjoy, it wil be a great trip!

On the plus side with ff miles accumulated on the way there you'll have a free flight on the way back
Will you get to stop in any of those locations long enough to check 'em out?

yes I've finally signed up for star alliance points. So i will be getting a shit load of them! My plane ticket back from NZ to Van is just as crazy. I'm going auckland-singapore-seoul-Vancouver....haha look on a map that's why i'm laughing. So after NZ it will be cool because I will have the opportunity to go to asia again.
Jamie- I'm flying singapore airlines. I could leave a day later and then i would only have three planes but then i would have a 9 hour wait at the airport in singapore. The reason i can't break up my flight on the way there is because I'm meeting up with my best friend in bangkok. She's going to be travelling with me for 2.5 weeks...sooooo I guess i'll just grin and bear it. I plan on having a beer in those three stopover citys (something 'local' i'll ask for..hehe)..
But the flight is actually pretty good. It has a no date change fee which is pretty awesome. (every flight i've ever had I always had to pay $100 to change the date) And it's and upgraded fair so it's pretty flexible with route change as well. I heard singapore airlines is good. Soooo yeah..I always do things the hard way. Last year I flew to london . i took 3 flights and it took 24 hours (rather than a 9 hour flight). But I saved $150

That sounds awesome - except for the flights. I used to fly Cathay - Kuala Lumpur - Hong Kong - Vancouver, which would suck a lot less than the route you're on. If you're still in SEA in December...well, hopefully I'll be in SEA in December.
