Itinerary for Greece-Turkey-Syria-Spain (or maybe not Syria)
Hey tpunks, I have two choices for my trips:
Greece-Turkey-Syria-Spain
OR
Greece-Turkey-Spain (spend more time in Turkey, and costs $500 bucks less)
Which one would you choose?

It's a tough tradeoff: damascus or seeing more towns in Turkey..

Oh man I hate you so much for that trip!! I also like the first one... I have never met anyone who has went to Syria before, and I do not think many people even consider it for a trip. I think it would be a great experience, and I expect to see some pictures  ! Of course, that extra 500$ could come in useful....

Ahhh! I just emailed you.
You DO NOT need three days in Gallipoli!!! And it's good that you're already using the Turkish name because the Turks will laugh at you if you say it in English!
And on your last day in Istanbul, go to a hamam!! So cool. It will be refreshing after the treks around all that city dirt and day-tripping. Will you try to go to Aleppo or Palmyra?

I'm actually surpised, I thought the tpunk collective would favour exploring small towns and spending more time in a region and knocking down costs... but I guess Syria is a good reason in itself.
Hmm... maybe I can shave off that $500 from somehwere else.
It is possible to get flights from London-Athens for under $200????

I know I was messing around looking at flights a few weeks ago and found one from london to Rome for a penny.... I dunno if that would help you though...

Might not help, but I am flying Swiss Air from Amsterdam to Athens for 200 euro. Londons cheap like Schipol to fly out of so hopefully you will get lucky. Check out all the major European airlines and see what deals they have going on. Good luck

Totally! I think as a whole we are. But also look at the tremendous amount of time a lot of people her spend away. There's some sort of hierarchical site-seeing thingie where the top tier is what you see when you're taking a day/weekend trip, next is when you're doing a "vacation" (in my mind 7-14 days), an extended vackay (2-6 weeks) and then up from there (maybe studying abroad or an exchange 6 weeks-6 months, then lifestyle traveling which I would say is longer). I'm sure the person who takes a weekend trip to Damascus (well, number one is not coming from Canada  ) is going to see a lot of different things than the person who is spending a year traveling around the world or a region. My friends who did Istanbul with me for a day and a half (they had an extra day without me) did not see nearly as much as I did when I stayed for over a week in the same central location, but we all "saw" Istanbul.

which reminds me, I still gotta book my Damascus flight. Actually first thing I should do is look into getting a Syrian visa...
Actually for some reason, quite a few people I know have been to Syria. My old boss actually worked at the Canadian embassy in Damascus for like 3 years....

I just called up the Syrian embassy and it looks like visas won't be too much trouble... but it costs $75 bucks!
Man, now I know why they're in the axis of evil.... baaa-zing! :D

I found a much cheaper way to get to Damascus from Istanbul (without paying Turkish airlines $500!)
Turns out you can take the flight down domestically to south of Turkey to the city of Antalya which is close to Syria. From there you can just catch a bus to Aleppo (3 hours), and then to Damscus from there (4 hours).
This is good, it lets me stay in Aleppo for 2 nights, which promises to be interesting... heard there are great Crusader castles there.
Anyway, good info if anyone else is planning on heading to Syria...

Yeah, well, when I went to Turkey (our *European* friends!!) a Turkish tourist visa for Americans was $100 OR 100 farging Euros!! I had been in Germany for 2.5 months by then and was struggling to remember what a dollar looked like, and then I got bent over on the exchange rate!!
...but I got a really purty visa! Anyway, I freaking out excitedly for you.
