glad most of your immediate family go out. one of the folks i was referring to did it by himself and his family still has to pretend he's dead. the scarring sucks but you guys are better off.

and yes, now that you're out we can drink to that. coffee, guinness. just about anything you'd like, though booze of coffee would be an appropriate * to the old gang.

I'm a little confused about your friend....his family has to pretend he's dead?? I've never heard of this as a practice enforced by the church....might be some weird family thing...er sumpthin'.

Thanks...I wanted something a bit more conspicuous...and, something with a bit more sabor.

Right..I knew what you meant about "dead". That's pretty extreme. Poor guy. I'm lucky I haven't had to deal with that nonsense.

Yep. That guiness emoticon is great.

Unfortunately now after studying philosophy for four years i now don't believe in reality either. In fact none of us do. In the utterly nonsensical words of a very wise man:

i cant say im religious. i'm catholic, but i dont really go to church too often. i like the organized structure of the catholic church and they do some good things, i also like that they take firm stances on certain topics and stick with them, they arent swayed by whats popular at the time but rather stick to the moral doctorine however i do disagree with them on some stuff and i'm ashamed of some of the actions by members and leaders of the church.

i'm pretty clueless as to what exactly i believe. i took a bunch of religion classes in college hoping that by learning more i could start to understand more clearly what i believe. it really only confused me more. so basically i have my own little religion going for me, that basically is more focused on being a good person for 7 days a week rather than being a bad person for 6 days a week then going to church on sunday and thinking your better than other people since your at church.

Yeah, we need a poll option for "anti-religion."* I understand the purpose it serves and have no problem with people of any religion, but I'd rather just not have anything to do with it.

Otherwise, please add a poll option for "I'd burst into flames if I walked into a church." Thank you.

that's exactly where i am. my parents raised me under extreme fundamentalist christianity (nothing but the christian radio station until mom left dad), and there are just so many things i don't agree with. this does not mean i don't enjoy exploring those ancient european cathedrals. the creepy feeling i get walking into those is utterly exhilarating.

I don't consider myself religious, but spiritual. I am a firm non believer in organized religion. I think its a money making corporation leading the herd, but thats just me. I think finding ones own concept of the powers that be much stronger than conforming to what others want to tell you to believe. Live life and base your decisions on that and try to be good and treat others with respect.

I am a deist with perhaps, some Christian tendencies. Believe in God? Yup but I do so based on the cosmological argument of: Every occurence had a cause, the Universe exists, therefore the Universe was caused.

Believe that Jesus is the messiah? Ummm... if he isn't he sure influenced a lot of people so...maybe, but I'm a lot more sure about God then Jesus.

Having a science (engineering) background I discard most "explanations" from the bible. I took a religion quiz online and found I was most closely a Reformed Jew, or a Unitarian Universalist (<- probably because I don't believe in hell, at least not in the traditional definition of eternal suffering)

If I'm in a good mood I'm agnostic but usually I'm pretty much an Atheist. However I refuse to argue my beliefs with anyone because even though I'm an exceptional arguer it's one argument you can't win. Also I'd hate to be responsible for influencing someone elses beliefs.

Oh just fyi I was raised a Catholic.

But then you could be allowing other less rational people influence the beliefs of others. I wish people could talk about religion without taking other opinions as an insult to everything they stand for (Atheists included). Religion is an important part of human culture and shouldn't be ignored but we're not realising it's full potential by closing ourselfs off from the opinions of others.

I am more than happy to argue religion, however, as mentioned above, I also find that most people who have strong religious beliefs become very emotional very quickly in any such argument. The discussion then degenerates into an irrational, emotional argument that no longer employs much in the way of logical thought process. Due to that, its just not worth it. At this point, I generally just stay away from the whole thing unless I am speaking with someone who is not emotionally invested in a particular religion and can speak of the aspects of different religions and the consequences of those religions in a logical and unemotional way.

I grew up in a very religious family, but enjoy learning about other traditions as well. I've found that if you get beyond the rules and cultural differences-- the most important teachings are universal. We know that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam share many common teachings because of their common ancestry, but even Buddhism and the eastern traditions hold many similarities.

One great book that explores some of these connections is Thich Nhat Hanh's "Going Home: Jesus and Buddha as Brothers." It can be mind-opening to those of us who are accustomed to more "one way to heaven" type theology.

I'll never argue religion with anyone, but it makes for great discussion.

My favorite thing to say is: I am spiritual but not religious. I love hearing about what other people believe in, and I think there are so many great aspects of every religion that I could never be a part of just one. With that said, there are also many aspects of certain religions I am highly against.

I'd probably be the same but at the same time I can see the danger in that style of thinking. Whats to stop people from corupting the usually good values of a particular religion to serve a warped view of the world, like in Waco.

I see religion as a coming together of comon believes so everyones on the same page.

That's what I find so interesting about religion, that all these cultures all over the world came to more or less the same conclusion. Maybe their all linked somehow but the same core values of, look out for one another, don't be selfish and greedy and respect the world you live in are the ones we all picked up on like it was built into us.

I don't remember if I ever answered this...

Anyway I don't consider myself to be religious. I was christened when I was a baby, and was dragged to church occasionally by my mum when I was aged about 7 - 9. Then she decided she didn't actually believe, so we stopped having to go.

I don't believe in god at all. But I was thinking the other day that it must be nice to have something like that to believe in!
