...yer,simple do you recycle

With the world as it is and global warming,climate change and the effect this has on travelling and tourism,and how these things are now changing with the weather. Do you yourself as a backpacker,a traveller,a tourist recycle?

Living in such a small community/"village" as i do,this place a seasonal place,its up and running for all sorts of travellers during the summer,then come winter it dies down,and after workin last year in a chip shop,we closed in november,and so we were open later in the year because we were making money...and then we closed because we weren't. Do your travel plans change depending on the season,i mean why go to europe in summer?,why not in winter,it'd be more beneficial in the long run if you went in the winter because you help keep small little places chugging along until the summer again.

but back to the topic at hand,recycling,do you recycle,i do and i don't,in the hostel i work at we have a bin for scraps to go in our compost bin,and we have a bin for glass and one for tins and one for paper and one for plastic bags,the rest is in the normal bin, and at home i dont do any recycling what so ever.

What do you do?
Do you help out?

There was a topic like this somewhere, with a lot of interesting replies and thoughts about the whole process, as well as responsible tourism. I can't remember where it is, but dig around and have a read through, there's some good stuff in there.

Recycling in Germany is a fine art, and we do our bit, except don't have a compost bin. I guess when we finally get moved into our little farmhouse, we'll be able to have a proper bin and a garden to benefit from it, but for now, paper, plastics, bottles, metal, shoes and clothing all have their respective containers and pick-up days, and organic waste gets picked up twice a month.

As for traveling in summer versus winter, I think the logistics of many packers being students comes into play there - you travel when you have the time, in most cases. As for me, I love traveling in the off season, but I live in Europe at the moment, so it's reasonable for me to pick up and go somewhere for a weekend or week at a time - that doesn't work so well for people who pay $$$$$$$$$$ for airfare and want to have more time in country. I personally think February is the single best time to take a vacation, because by that time I'm so sick of winter I'm delighted to be anywhere that isn't grey and drear every day. But, by a sick twist of fate, February's about the only month that never seems to have any stat holidays, or now that we're in Germany and have kids in school, any school breaks. Actually, I think this year they do get a couple of days off, so we're going skiing, if the plan holds that long.

I know what you mean. I grew up on Cape Cod where many jobs are also seasonal. It worked well for me when I was in school because it gave me an opportunity to make money to pay for school. But for many people it was diificult to find work in the winter. I believe all of that has changed now that the Cape has a much larger year round population.

In regards to recycling, I know Curitiba, Brazil is known to be the cleanest city in the world. They came up with a well designed transportation system, a public parks program, and a recycling system (you pay taxes then get your money back by recycling your garbage). It is all very simple.

did you see the same show i did? i seen some shit on tv about that city and its ways.. priddy cool

we have normal bin for shit rubbish and recycable bin for assorted recycable shit not that hard for me

We have to recycle in Ireland it's the LAW! You have a regular bin for anything but your charged on weight so it's in your best interest to recycle as much as possible. We don't have a composting bin yet but they plan to bring those in soon enough, there already on trial around the country. Illegal dumping is a big ofence here as well. You can get fined anywhere from €500 - €10000 for personal dumping without a permit. One guy in Dublin got fined €750 for trowing a ciggarette butt out his car window.

It's not so hard for Ireland to impliment nationwide plans like recycling as we're so small and there's never really more than 15 -20 miles between towns.

I do as much as i can, to be honest the company i work for has all these recycling procedures but it all ends up in the same bin! lol

I will put the plastic bottle Im drinking from in the proper receptacle if its convenient, but I make no real effort to recycle. I probably should.

I get the feeling that's all their doing with the domestic rubbish aswell.

The Irish government got in trouble a year or two ago for sending regular rubbish to Sweden, it was supposed to be recycling rubbish, then we wouldn't take it back.

It only worked for a few months though.

I am a big advocate of recycling and recycling pretty much everything, minus a compost bin (I live in a small apartment). At work I even helped make sure everyone has paper recycling at their desk and at my old high school I helped start and run a can recycling program.

When my younger sister turned 21 we went to Vegas with our family. My mom looked at me and asked why I had been carrying around an empty water bottle for hours. "I am waiting for a recycling bin". She just laughed, apparently by all the lavish hotels and water features I should have known I wasn't going to find a recycling bin on the strip

yep, we do cans/bottles and cardboard (not picked up where I live but we make a weekly trip to depot) and compost. I find it embarrassing that I live in the capital city of the province and there is no recycling program.

in the town i work in recycling is mandatory for businesses and they offer pickup.

once a year we participate in a community cleanup where we cleanup the green space and wooded areas of our neighborhood.

I recylce mostly the cans and bottles. I don't get a newspaper so that kind of rules out that, although maybe I should start compiling all the junk mail I get everyday for the recycle pickup.

I should get more into it though and start grabbing more of the tin cans and stuff and set them aside.

Recycling has become mandatory inside the Seattle city limits. That's because we're all a bunch of granola-crunching "earth" hippies.

Well back in Atlanta we had to PAY to have the government come get the recycling. There is one recycle center but it is in the dodgiest neighborhood I have seen. I simply didn't do it and never have in my life.

That said, I am moving to California at the end of my trip (most likely) and you get paid for it. So, I will definately do it then.

Well, they pay you for it here if you take it to a recycling center or can find those cool automated recycling machines. Otherwise, the city usually comes and picks 'em up, and charges you $60/month for the pleasure of being awakened by garbage trucks at 6 am.

Oh ok, I see what you mean. I live in MA too and can go to the centers or to the grocery store where they have the machines Omi was talking about. For some reason I thought they paid you for the ones they picked up curbside or something.

Time ot load up the truck and bring them all to MI for a killing hehe...
