Guys, thinking of travelling to downtown mexico in '05 as part of my usa/canada journey...
Can anyone tell me if cancun is worth going too. does it offer anything unique, or no different than ibiza, or IOS in the greek islands.
Anyone that feels like letting me know something about this place, do share...

Cancun is a great place to go to, you have all the clubs to check out on the strip, and then if you want to get touristic, you can go to Chichen Itza(Mayan Ruins), Tulum(more ruins with an awesome beach), Xcaret (a cool cave you can snorkel through, and relax), Helja(another great paradise where you can go snorkeling, and just lounge on some beach chairs, and enjoy cancun), There is so much to do there, I highly recommended.

Or if you don't care for the whole beach scene, you can base yourself out of Merida (an inland city about 5 hours drive ? from Cancun). There are TONS of Mayan ruins in the area around there.
As a matter of fact, that area is one of my "back pocket trips." Those are places I've read up on and whip out to use if a planned trip falls through and I'm looking for somewhere to go. I was going to rent a car and spend a week going from ruin to ruin, including Chichen Itza (cool photos, Voyd).

Haha tp...I actually saw that movie in an actual theatre. There was barely anyone in the theater. There was me, my friend and a group of 17 year olds...Actually that movie did the opposite. I actually am repulsed by the whole idea that cancun has turned into one huge frat party. I was actually supposed to go to cancun for a big grad party after finishing highschool, but i'm sooooo glad i didn't. Don't get me wrong, I'm far from being a party pooper but I think it's disgusting that people would go to such lengths to have "fun"....HOWEVER cancun has some beautiful ruins nearby and watersports galore. I think the key going to a huge resort town like cancun, ibiza, mazatlan etc is having a perfect balance between having fun, but also getting away from that and taking time to see the "real" city.

I agree, Dio. I like to party too but, for me, there definitely needs to be more than just partying daily and nightly I need to see some architecture, ruins, castles, local authentic cuisine, interaction with locals from that country or any other, anything of historical significance, etc...
I can party like a frat guy at home !

Yeah, Cancun is not my cup of tea. Way to commercialized. Pretty much any place with a government planned "Zona Hoteleria" you are probably going to want to avoid. Chichen Itza is awsome though, and they actually let you climb the giant pyramid which they will probably stop doing soon. I prefer Cabo San Lucas to Cancun any day. Its got a better town and unbeatable sportfishing.

Being a huge Van Halen fan, cabo san lucas sounds like the spot. Going to check out its location now. Is it the home of the famous Cabo Wabo?
Thanks

Yep, Sammy Hagar's own. Hehe. I didn't go there when I was in Cabo, but it's probably the best club in town.

I did. My buddy and his girlfriend got pretty blitzed there and had to stagger back to the hotel, while we were able to continue on...
I hear Puerto Valllarta is nice, too, but haven't been there...

WWM... how expensive was the hotel that you stayed in whilst in cabo san lucas...
Sounded like you had a blast, and being within walkin distance of cabo wabo (god i love the song too) sounds a good package...
