So tuesday I quit my job and talked my friend steve into roadtrippin with me down to Rocky Point, Mexico (Puerto Penasco). We left Wednesday morning and started for rocky point which is only four hours away. As we drove I started thinking about how much I hate tourist traps and how I wanted to surf so we drove past mainland mexico and down into Tecate. As many of you know Tecate is a fine mexican beer and the brewery happens to be in the town of the same name on the california/arizona/mexico boarder. From Tecate we took Mexico 3 south through the wine country of northern Baja to the port town of Ensenada. If I hadn't known any better I would have thought I was in Napa Valley driving through the wine country. It was gorgeous.

The port town of Ensenada is about 3 hours south of San Diego and right on the pacific ocean (thus the port). Since it is a stop off for the cruise lines it is a bit touristy. Ok alot touristy and I stayed in a best western (oh the shame eh?).

Thursday we woke up and decided that it was imperative that we find a small surf town somewhere further south on the coast. About an hour south of Ensenada along highway 1 I spotted a sign for Coyote Cal's HI hostel and the sign indicated it was right on the beach. 30 minutes later I pulled into one of the coolest hostels I have ever had the opportunity to stay at. The entire coast along that area is chock full of great surfing beaches and the best part is that the possibility of you being the only person there is extremely high. I absolutely loved it. The hostels bar was a bit expensive I thought (2.50 for a beer) but the place was cool anyway. So most of thursday afternoon was spent off-roading in the pathgrinder up and down the beaches and then we retired to the hostel and met the only other packer there a canadian bloke. We drank fairly heavy that night and still neither of us felt much.

Friday rolled around and we drove back up to Ensenada with the Nova Scotian to get some groceries and some pants. We had every intention of staying at Coyote Cal's until monday when we would go back to phoenix. We stocked up on food and beer in town (23 dollars for 2 20 cases of corona bottles) and returned to the hostel. After we made ourselves some grub we invited three girls that had just shown up to go watch the sunset with us. That night was epic. Turns out that the girls had all met eachother in san diego and had decided to travel together for a bit, their plan was to split ways the next day (saturday) with two of them going south and one heading back to san diego. They ended the beach sunset by asking for a ride to the bus stop in the morning, Steve and I did one better.

Saturday morning comes and the five of us, Steve, Viv(from Nottingshire), D(from Montreal), Zed(from Norfolk) and myself start driving south to Muluge. See steve and I decided we didnt have anything better to do and the ocean was a bit too cold for our balls anyway. 10 hours later we pull into the most epic lodging I have ever seen. Ever. It was like a corona commercial, or a freakin "come to hawaii" commercial type thing. We stayed at a place called EcoMundo. They have eight huts made out of mud and bamboo and what not with cots inside located right on the beach in the bahia de concepcion. The water was magical and the phosphuros(sp?) was glowing with the tide rolling in. I kicked off the sandals and walked in, immediately stepping on what I found out was a very irrate stingray. Needless to say he left his mark.
Everyone was asleep at Ecomundo when we arrived so we made ourselves at home in an empty bungalow, hijackin a third cot for the girls and steve and I crashing on the hammocks located outside the "door". Morning came and I awoke to meet Gary and Tracey the colorado couple in their late twenties that run the place. The bungalow costs 220 pesos a night and it is well worth every penny.

We spent sunday out on the water in two kayaks we rented from Gary and a rough map of the half a dozen islands located around the area. I spent the day trying to woo Viv and I might add failed rather turribly at it. Viv and I were in a double person sea kayak while the other three were in a three person green box that someone made float. They had a rough time with it.

6 hours and 10 miles later we beached directly across the bay from ecomundo and ate at Ani's Restaurant. Also owned and operated by an american. The food and the prices were definitly mexican though. We learned that Muluge is just starting to come into the tourist's eye as a destination point but it is small enough that it will probably forever remain under the radar. I know that all five of us vowed to return.

Sunday night around ten o'clock after showers and returning to Ani's for dinner Steve, D and I bid farewell to our english chickas (i had really fallen for Viv and had a rough time leaving them there carless and alone) and started our long drive back to San Diego. Around 12 on Monday we dropped D off at the Ocean Beach Hostel and started our final drive to Surprise, arriving around 7pm after 21 hours of straight driving.

That ended my crazy ass month. Now steve is leaving this week to return home to Kansas City (he played on the team I worked for and lived with my parents), I am looking for a new job and contemplating life as I know it. I am also dreaming about finding a girl like Viv and getting a relationship going, this single BS is taking it's toll on me. I am glad to be back on TP and told tons of people about what we are doing here. Hopefully they decide to stop by.

I'll post pics soon.

Hey Jake,

Sounds like an awesome time! When you get a chance, put something good about those hostels on the appropriate Tpunk page. I want to remember them!

Jake, if I were to look at driving further on down the Baja coast are hostels common to find? I have been looking online and not really finding all that much so far.
