So I am walking with this girl who I met at the bar who I presumed was not a prostitute as she was not trying to get me back to a hotel. We drank and then agreed to walk back to her place. She says "there are some very bad boys around here". I did not even see anyone around and all of a sudden I have one guy putting me in a sleeper hold and four others raping my pockets. They stole the 10euros in my wallet and broke the chain, and my pocket knife. Pretty pissed since it was my first night in this beautiful city. I guess it could have been worse, I am still here to write about it and with this terrible hangover I will make my way around the Guadi architecture. I love everybody. Hope you all are doing well and I will post pics when I get back home this weekend.

That IS one thing about Barcelona...gorgeous city, but ridiculous crime rate that specifically targets tourists. A snatch and grab of a woman's purse occurred not 30 yards from where I was sitting in a bar. We heard the scream, ran outside and saw one very shaken young traveler, but the thief was nowhere to be seen.
Sorry to hear about it, and hope it doesn't ruin your trip.

Yeah I was attacked there (well attempted attacking) but it was something that more than likely could have been prevented... You've really just gotta be safe and extra cautious and keep the cities beutiful parts in the front of your mind cause it really is a great city.

That sucks balls dude ... hope you're ok. Was it just a question of being in a shady part of town or is it really that common? There are parts of any city in the world that're bad news if you're hammered and alone, I suppose...

What a terrible thing! I am sorry for that...But thanks for sharing it with us... When I am walking around my city... I try to make really sure I'm going to be safe... do not walk late, drunk, alone etc...But when I am traveling it feels like I'm in the paradise and I just forget to make sure I'll be safe...I do whatever I want to do.. And sometimes It can be bad...Hope everything goes well for you

Yeah that sucks. I just left Spain, and I had a couple of gangs eyeing me up as a target in Madrid and Valencia but thanfully I got away ok. Almost everyone I talked to in Barcelona had been robbed, and a couple of girls lost everything and had to wait for family to send money through Western Union. Since then I've started keeping one credit card in my wallet, and the other in my pack. That way I should be still be able to get some money even if I'm a mugging victim.
Safe travels everyone
Dan

Dude! That sucks!
Travelguy - in Barcelona, thieving IS a 9-5 job for some... It's rumored that there are still pickpocketing schools there, and I'd believe it - those bastards are good.
Still, Barcelona still ranks as my favorite city in the world. It's too beautiful and the people too great not to be loved, despite all the tourist-oriented crime. But hey, if such tales of thievery scare away more of the throngs of tourists that flock there in the summertime, I can't say I'd be disappointed. (Am I a dick for hating big crowds?)
