Hello all,

My name is Allen Volpe, and I am a student currently living in London. I am originally from California and am working in the UK for roughly 6 months. I have never gone backpacking before, and I would definately like to conclude my trip to Europe with a nice long treck.

I do not plan to camp, so won't be needing a sleeping bag/tent and such. I plan to travel for at least a month, though I may extend that to about two, depends on how much I can save in the meantime. Oh, and I will start travelling mid February, so I imagine it will be cold. Where I will be traveling is still up in the air, but I definately want to hit Spain, Amsterdam, Germany, Italy and whatever else comes to mind. I am definately open to suggestions on this point.

I have already read the posts on what to bring and found them very informative, though I don't know exactly what kinds of things to bring.

I need a good backpack, but what kinds would you suggest? Something not too huge, but I don't really have any idea how much space all the stuff I need to bring will take. I do plan to travel as light as possible, so hopefully no superfluous stuff.

I read a number of posts proclaiming the evils of cotton. What other materials should I bring? Truth be told I've grown up with cotton as the staple of my wardrobe, so I'm not sure how to roll with this one.

Well, thats all that comes to mind at the moment. Thanks in advance, and I'm pleased to meet you all!

Best wishes,

Volpe

Hi and welcome to the boards!

There are some backpack gurus here that should be able to help with that one - I also think there's a lot of info under the gear section of travelpunk, including a thread on how to select a pack (pinned at top).

If you don't like cold, I'd recommend staying as far south as possible, but if you don't mind, then northern countries are beautiful and there's a lot to see and do.

Enjoy your stay abroad and don't be a stranger.

Welcome mate !

As for backpacks, best if yer hit a shop and get to touch/feel the varieties out there; it'll give a good idea what you might need.

Plus, there's a separate forum on gears - some of the 'xperts there can guide ya through it.

Cheers!

yeah, pretty much all of your questions can be answered through the different forums on this site.

on the backpack...going into a store to try on backpacks is your best bet. it's good to get the one that is going to be the best fitted to your body. i mean, it's going to be just another part of your body for one or two months. we were just talking about pack weight in another topic this week. i think everyone pretty much agrees that anything over 35 pounds and you might be miserable. try to as light as possible.

as for places to go, i haven't yet traveled outside of north america yet, but i refer to one of our members website. he has traveled freackin everywhere and has alot of great descriptions....WorldWideMike

anyhow, stick around and you'll learn everything there is to know to planning your trip right....and

WELCOME TO TRAVELPUNK!!!

I dont think there's a question about travel that someone here can't answer.

You must be doing Bunac, where are you working? Try going to STA Travel in Russel square, they have good deals on packs and stuff like that and can give you more details about getting info and things you need.

Thanks so much! I was having issues finding stores for some reason. All the ones i'd find the numbers on the internet for are out of business, erg.

Oh, my walls are white/wood. (you know, spiffy varnish).

I'll look into STA Travel next week. (I'm in Edinburgh right now) Thanks again!
