Being a true blue aussie that has vegemite and beer before riding his kangaroo to work in the morning for a long day wrestling crocodiles hopefully I can help you out a little.

1. Don't take travellers cheques. They're a pain, you lose a lot of money on the exchange and outside of hotels and banks few places will accept them. Australia has a massive ATM network and the great majority of places will also have EFTPOS facilities. The ATMs are all part of the Maestro, Cirrus and PLUS networks, so your debit cards will work along with your Visa and Mastercards. Be aware that very few places will accept American Express. If you happen to be from New Zealand, Bankcard is also widely accepted.

2. The person that posted above on the dangers of our sun is completely correct. Don't worry about buying some sunscreen before you come, buy it when you are over here as stronger suncreams are available. Pharmacies, supermarkets etc etc will all sell it.

3. For U2fan, U2 is taking its Vertigo Tour to Australia in March. Dates:
17 March 2006, Ericsson Stadium, Auckland, New Zealand
21 March 2006, Queensland Sports And Athletics Centre, Brisbane, Australia
24 March 2006, Telstra Dome, Melbourne, Australia
28 March 2006, AAMI Stadium, Adelaide, Australia
31 March 2006, Telstra Stadium, Sydney, Australia

4. Australia is a VERY big place and population is concentrated in the cities. There are properties that are owned by individuals in the North of Western Australia that are bigger than the UK! If you decide to head into the desert, please please please make sure you have a roadworthy vehicle, plenty of spare fuel and water. Leave travel plans with someone trustworthy and keep in touch with them at planned intervals. If something does happen, stay with your vehicle at all times - it makes you a damn site easier to locate. In the desert it will get very cold at night, so if you're camping please be prepared.

I want to go to New Zealand, Tasmania and Australia.
It cracks me up that you've specified Tasmania and Australia seperately. Don't worry we feel the same!

If anyone has any questions, I'm more than happy to help.
