Omisan is pretty much right. I also would like to add that food can be expensive if you eat out alot. Grocery is dirt cheap as always. I am a STRONG lover of Flying pig Downtown. The hash and beer flow freely there all day and night. Good times.

I know a lot of people recommend the Flying Pig hostel downtown; it seems like a hard-core party place which can be fun but also kind of exhausting sometimes too. 
I'm sure some other Amsterdam-savvy folks will be along momentarily to give you better advice. Have a great time!
