hello everyone. its my first time on here and i was just wondering if anybody has any general advice about backpacking in Amsterdam. specifically, some good hostels & cheap eats.

im planning a trip around the end of december/beginning of january and right now im looking at the Heart of Amsterdam Hostel and Hostel the Globe Center.

im open to any information (good and bad) about traveling to Amsterdam. i want to get into some of the less touristy and more cultural things they have to offer.

thank you!

Hi Amelia! Welcome to the boards.

I haven't really been to Amsterdam, only the airport. I know a lot of people recommend the Flying Pig hostel downtown; it seems like a hard-core party place which can be fun but also kind of exhausting sometimes too.

My only tip is to try to avoid the Red Light District at night if you're alone. I'm sure some other Amsterdam-savvy folks will be along momentarily to give you better advice. Have a great time!

Here are my highlights:

Van Gogh Museum

Yellowbike ride through the Dutch countryside (highly recommended)

bruin cafes (basically, old bars) frequented by locals

The bar/club at the Winston Hotel, Warmoesstraat 129 (just south of the RLD, full of cool locals)

"window shopping" the RLD

Heineken Brouwerij tour

Omisan is pretty much right. I also would like to add that food can be expensive if you eat out alot. Grocery is dirt cheap as always. I am a STRONG lover of Flying pig Downtown. The hash and beer flow freely there all day and night. Good times.

My Highlights:

RLD
Heineken Tour
Van Gogh
Dutch Pancakes (absolutely awesome!)
Space Cakes (woops!)
Dam Square
Anne Franke House (busy place, but still very interesting)
and of course cafe's

Have fun man!
