Hi,
I found this travelpunk while researching my trip. This is an awesome site, so thanks for the stories and the help. I'm 27 yr old guy from Southern California. I was in the Marine Corps, so got to see some of the world, but never done any travelling like this before. I'm going to be travelling between the beginning of Sept until just before Christmas. I'l be spending a few weeks between the UK and Ireland, then a 3 month Eurailpass. I'm super excited about it all. I'm going alone but hope to make friends along the way. Will be travelling on a budget as much as possible, but I'm not broke and can afford to splurge a little here and there where it counts. I'd appreciate any advice or friends.
Thanks, Richie

How far did you get to travel in the Marines? A buddy of mine is still enlisted for his second tour now but gets out next year. He did some time in Korea, Australia, Okinawa and then around the US.

Definantly check in and ask some questions when you need them. Even on the road people come here to get help and just say Hi. After being on here a bit you'll see how nice everyone is and how it really is a little community.

Yeah, I'm sure you'll find a slight difference traveling with the USMC and traveling independently, so ask away! A great way to meet people is through hostels. Yes, everyone always seems to hear horror stories about stuff being stolen and bed bugs, but I swear, for every horror story, there are like 1000 "it was fine/good/great/didn't suck" stories. An excellent search tool is located here. It's a very reputable booking engine that we all know and love!

Feel free to ask away. You're lucky to be avoiding peak season, saving you on accomadation, transportation and probably most activities. You can hit the touristy spots with less tourists!

There is so much information here throughout these boards, if you have the time, browse through packing tips, stories, transportation advice etc. Some things are brought up you wouldn't normally think of.

Good luck!

Hey thanks everybody. I have already been messing around on here for awhile before actually introducing myself and have already gotten some great help and info here. Its a great site, and the hostel search engine is awesome and has been very helpful. To answer someones Question when I was in the Marines I did two West-Pac deployments and went to Darwin, Cairns, Sydney, and Perth/Fremantle in Aussie(fuckin love Australia) also Singapore, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Iraq. Also in my Life been all the way up the coast from Mexico to Canada etc.

Thanks for the warm welcome and feel freeto drop me a line whenever.

oohhh sorry also to answer Teri's question After a few weeks between the UK and Ireland I fly into Paris from Dublin and at that point have a 3 month Eurailpass, so wherever that'll take me. I'm still doing my research on a loose iteniary just to have as a general guide, but incomplete as of yet. As a general plan though I figured I'd head North before it gets even colder than it already is than work my way back south. All thats certain is I have to be back in London by a certain date for my flight back to the states, and Eurail only is good in certain countries, beyond that I'd love to put as many stamps in my passport as possible.
