hey all...
i'm making my first overseas trip to london in less than 2 weeks, and i'm doing it alone.
(meeting people there, but the flight/first day will be in solitude).
this will also be the 2nd time in my life that i've ever been on an airplane.
i've read up on the new 'banned from airplanes' lists.. what's up with ipods?
it looks like i'm allowed to carry it on board when leaving the US.. but can't when i'm leaving the UK?
i'm travelling super light, and was hoping to not have to check any baggage.
and two more questions...
anyone gonna be in london on september 8th and wanna meet up? that's the day i'd be glad for some company.
anyone ever stay at the globetrotters inn? how is it?
thanks for any info you can give me..

Welcome aboard!!!
well.. I think the restrictions only apply to the UK, that's why you can fly to there with your i-pod, but on the way out of the UK yopu have to check in all your baggage. Hopefully someone who's recentlly flown out of London will be able to clarify.

Hi digitalkate,
iPods and other electronics were not allowed under previous restrictions. That is no longer the case.
Here's the latest travel advisory for customers leaving from the UK...
Quote:
Customers departing from the UK (including customers transferring through the UK):
These restrictions were last updated on 23 August 2006
Customers travelling from the UK will be able to take on board as hand baggage one cabin bag no bigger than 45cm x 35cm x 16cm, the size of a small laptop bag, inclusive of wheels and handles
Cabin baggage MUST NOT contain:
* Any cosmetics
* Any toiletries
* Any liquids
* Any drinks
* Cigarette lighters (Cigarette lighters may not be checked into the hold. They can be purchased airside and disposed of before boarding a flight)
Items previously prohibited in cabin baggage, such as sharp objects, should not be carried onboard.
Cabin baggage CAN contain the following:
* Electronic equipment, including laptops, mobile phones, digital cameras and portable music and DVD players
* Essential medicines in liquid form provided they are under 50ml. Customers will be asked to taste the liquid. If they cannot taste the liquid for any reason they will be asked to go to an airport pharmacy to have the medicine verified.
* Baby milk and liquid baby food (the contents of each bottle MUST be tasted by the parent)
Other items normally carried in cabin baggage, such as books and essential items for the flight, as long as they fit into a bag no bigger than 45cm x 35cm x 16cm.
Nothing must be carried in pockets.
Please ensure that you do not check into the hold any essential items such as:
·Household and car keys (including electric key fobs)
·Travel documents including passport and itinerary and any important contact details
·Essential medicines for the journey
·Wallets or pocket size purses
All electronic equipment will need to be removed from the item of hand baggage and screened separately. We recommend these items be packed carefully for easy removal at the security search point.
[/b]

If you truly want to only take a carry-on bag, please note that for now, you'll only be allowed ONE bag on your trip home from the UK (unlike the 1+1 personal item rules for US domestic flights) and that ONE bag will have to meet the size specifications above. Also, you'll not be allowed to bring ANY toiletries, cosmetics, or any kind of liquid or gel on the trip back to the US (as opposed to being allowed to bring solid cosmetics and toiletries such as deodorant). You'd have to buy whatever you'll need in the UK and then throw it away before you fly home (if the security restrictions are still in place).
I hope that helps and have a fantastic trip!
