what's up gang? love the site. it's a huge help to someone like me who has made it this far without sleeping in a hostel. let alone a solo trip.
i'm 28, from the boston area, and looking to catch up on all the travelling i should've done right out of college. i'm hoping this is the first in a series of trips over the next couple of years. there's a lot of the world i'd like to see but i'm on a very limited budget.
i finally pulled the trigger and booked a solo trip to iceland. 10 days. i'm leaving may 20th and am working on a loose itinerary. it's tough to see a country with so much and know that i'm going to have to limit myself to a few choice areas. i'd like to settle in and really get the feel for a couple of places rather than circumnavigate the country.
that being said, anyone been to iceland and have suggestions on where to go and what to do? i only know a couple of people who have been and they each have a different take. one swears by the western fjiords, another is telling me that the southeast is the way to go. i'm not looking for hardcore hiking, since i'll be limited gear-wise, but i'm primarily going to experience the landscape. i also plan on spending a few nights in reykjavik.
thanks everyone,
~collin

Welcome. Went to Iceland a few years back. It's a very small country, so you should be able to get around it quickly if you want to do a driving tour or something on the east side. We fwent into Reykjavik and Keflavik. It is such a neat looking place - just the terrain and all that. Very cool. I wanted to sit in a natural hot spring, but never got the chance. I want to go back and do a whale watching tour. I guess just hop on a travel site for it and see what interests you there. It's very American looking in a lot of ways (business wise), with European influences (or perhaps the other way around). Oh and the whole place smells like fish! And it's expensive.

thanks for the advice jamie, it is a pretty small place and the more i look at it the more i think i could do the whole loop. i just figured i'd try and combat my instinct to try to see everything since i habitually spread myself too thin. l'll definitely be spending some time in reykjavik and keflavik, eating lots of wind-dried cod, spending too much money for a beer (gulp) and taking in the terrain. i'll hit a hot spring in your honor.

thanks! the reasons for iceland may come off all metaphysical/dorky, so at the risk of sounding crazy here goes - long story short is that certain life-changing events have enabled me to travel freely, and i thought iceland would be a great choice since:
a. north tends to be the direction i head to get my head clear (i grew up in boston and would always head to the coast of maine for vacation, camping, etc.). it has some wisdom to it.
b. the atlantic carries with it the same symbolism and weight as the direction north.
c. from what i've seen so far, the landscape in iceland looks like the perfect place to head. i'm a fan of raw/harsh/wide/beautiful landscapes so it made the decision easy.
d. i hear the people there are friggin' awesome.
e. since it's my first solo backpack trip, i figured a country so safe that mothers leave thier kids in strollers outside while they grab coffee and go shopping is a nice place to get my wings.
f. while i was in school i always wanted to go to new zealand, but the more i find about iceland i think it has the same potential for me. and i like the fact that thought they speak english, i can spend the next month trying to learn one of the oldest/most archaic spoken languages in the world.
it may be a longer answer than you were looking for, but thanks for asking.
you heading anywhere anytime soon? you native to buenos aries or are you a transplant?

Well, I was born in La Plata (1 hour drive from BsAs) but I lived here "most of my life" (this is my home base... I lived in Damascus, Syria; Sierra Vista, AZ and Fayetteville, NC). And well, it seems like it's gonna be my homebase for some time now.
I'm planning a trip to Europe for may '07... I can hardly wait!!!
Hope you have a terriffic time in Iceland!!! and post some pics when you come back! It just feels like such a distant place to me ... duh it's like on the other side of the world, you probably cant get much northern than that... (without frosting your toes/ears!)

hey there, thanks for the messages:
since i'm new to tpunk, i'm not totally familiar with how the boards work. if, for instance, i'm responding to someone to say thanks, do i send them an email or just reply post on the board? it may be a stupid question, just want to be exercising good tpunk etiquette.
what a wonderfully random set of places to grow up in. no wonder you've got the travel bug. i'll be taking lots of pictures, so i'll definitely be posting them, both on tpunk as well as on my blog. i haven't written in the blog in almost two years, but i'm sure the trip will motivate me to start writing again.
it's funny that you're in argentina, because in addition to iceland i had been considering a trip to patagonia in january. iceland won out because i just needed to get going. have done any hiking/camping/travelling through patagonia while you've lived down there?
