It seems like every backpacker heads over to Interlaken, the extreme sports capital of Europe...

Geneve. Why? Because my Father was born there and I therefor have some prejudice! Nah in all seriousness I like Geneve its very international yet has maintained its Swiss culture. The largest fountain is there as well as great fillet au perche and raclette. Although if you like McDonalds you should know that Geneve is apparently home to the worlds most expensive Big Mac.

Bern is cool for a couple days to see the old city. I also recommend Lucerne for its cool lake. A 1 or 2 hour train gets you from Lucerne to Engelberg in the Swiss alps for some good photos and a nice relaxing day in a small Swiss town. Interlaken is cool and the have a Hooters there

Yeah everyone goes to Interlaken, and for good reason, but Lucern is a cool town that is oftern overlooked. It has an awesome mountain above the town with some interesting legends and myths surrounding it. You can hike up part way and then take the tram or take cable cars all the way up. The lake is beautful and has a ferry that will take you to these quiant littel towns along the shore. I wish I had spent more time there actually, there was stuff that I didnt get to do, like go into the hall of mirrors.

Interlaken is a really good base. Grindelwald is cool with huge mountains and good views from the cable car. Stunning scenery in Engelberg too- 3 cable cars to the top of Mount Titlis- and one of them revolves- a terrifying journey for me personally!!!

I bypassed Interlaken in favour of Lauterbrunnen - stayed in a hostel there and climbed up to Murren for what would have been awesome views, if it hadn't been socked in cloud!

I also liked Lucerne, but had the great advantage of staying with friends in both a small town in the St. Gallo region and Biel/Bienne, so they took me to places like Appenzell, Neufchatel and Gruyere (which was very quaint) and knew the best kind of foods to order. One of them lived in a village, and I got to experience the day when they drive the cattle up into the pastures for the summer, all decked out in bells and flowers, from my bedroom window.

We just drove through Switzerland, and had a wonderful time when the detour we attempted to avoid a horrible traffic jam backfired (the road was closed due to avalanche danger) the scenery we encountered by just veering off into the unknown was spectacular. And 1/2 an hour playing in the snow was way more fun than sitting in traffic.
