This board get's a lot of lurkers. That's right, I'm talking to you.
If you are planning a trip abroad and want to have the time of your life, you need to work on your interaction skills.
In my experience, a trip goes from ordinary to extraordinary because of the people that you meet on your travels.
However, in order to meet these people, you must interact with them. That means that sometimes, it's up to you to break the ice. You must be the one to say hello first, to the person sitting next to you at the bar/pub, park, party, museum... whatever.
You've been lurking here for a while counting down the days before you embark on that backpacking trip of a lifetime. Reading these posts, learning, preparing, laughing, dreaming...
Consider this practice. Register for a free account here, introduce yourself, post your questions/answers/tips, and get your spiff on!
You won't believe how easy it is to create solid friendships on here or throughout your travels, by taking the first step and interacting with this family style community. Check out our Past Meet-ups and see the proof!.
The only thing that you might be sorry about, is that you didn't start earlier.
Take action! Do it now.

I second that motion! I'm a very quiet guy around people I don't know and when I was younger it stopped me from meeting people ...but once you break the ice with someone for the first time, it just gets easier and easier!
Chances are if the person next to you isn't talking, they're shy too...so take a deep breath and just say "Hi, I'm yournamehere"...so easy to do and the rewards are well worth it
Cheers,
Craig

Everyone here lurked on the boards for awhile, I did. Dont wait for for some brain busting question to join the boards.
Introduce yourself and let everyone know where you are going, how long youll be gone, and share the fun with experinced and new backpackers alike.
Backpacking is all about meeting new people and seeing new places. This is great place to start!

Actually tadpole I was never a "lurker" cause that word freaks me out.
I exploded on the scene like a bat outta hades and have been crazy ever since. So if ya'll sleeper people would like to wake up and join the craziness that has become the sensation of travelpunk, please do so now.

I recommend this site all of the time. I haven't been abte to travel this year but I've learned a lot from everyone. It has definitely helped me out in planning future trips.

By all means, please come out of lurk mode... just be careful - some of us haven't been able to shut our squawking traps since!

Hi! I've been lurking here for about a week, I guess .... I just recently decided to take a trip -- I plan to leave in January. Hope to start in Japan and make my way through parts of Asia, hit up northern Africa (Egypt) and head on into Europe. Am I crazy???
Well anyway, you guys seem cool ... and you know a hell of a lot more than I do! I'm sure I'll be posting all sorts of questions, etc., while I try to figure out my trip!

I did lurk for like a week or so and then signed up. It was kind of funny cause after posting I saw all the people that I had been reading and recognizing around the site start answering back almost right away. It is definantly a different feeling once your a member around here.

I didn't lurk, when I find something I like I just jump at it. (Probably why i can't get a g/f, jumping at them always makes them run away screaming.) But Travelpunk kept letting me jump and so now I am stuck here. Since that fateful day in October of 2003, I have never had any desire to visit another travel site.
So, crack open a cold one and join us in some fun and quit watching us from the other side, looking like this , envious of all our fun.

I'm working at a resort called snowshoe mountain in west virginia, but I'll be in New York around nov 26-28 if anyones around and wants to have a drink or two?
