the world is not a cold dead place
good afternoon, travellers and punks, punks and travellers, travelpunks.
I'm a bit of a traveler myself. Alaska's the place I call home but I'm just as comfortable in New Mexico or Iceland or Scotland. As far as I can get away from wherever I am with as little stuff and as little money as possible is the way I tend to go, and avoiding at nearly all costs paying for places to sleep. I plan little and sometimes that works for me, and other times it doesn't. Hitching is my favorite mode of movement besides walking, and it's probably the most rewarding thing I've ever done.
monthlong winter trip starting in Amsterdam, leaving in a few weeks with a backpack and not much direction. Any recommendations?

Welcome to TPunk!! When I went to Amsterdam I saw the Anne Frank House and the Van Gough museam. ADam is not really a city I am knowledgable of but there are TPunks here who know it very well.

Hey and welcome to Tpunk!!! Ive been to the the Dam 5 times now... Fabulous city, but its going to be fucking cold and probably rainy when you get there if its in a few weeks... The Dam is best in the summer when you can wander the canals, get stoned and lay in the grass in Vondel Park etc.... But I personally would still go in the winter..... Its not easy sleeping free there in the winter... And its expensive as fuck there too... One free sleeping option would be to hop the train at night to Schipol airport and sleep there... Find the yoga meditation room and sleep in it... It has padded floors that are relatively soft.... Restrooms, restaurants, and they dont care if you stay in there overnight.... Ive suggested it to other travelers and it worked...

I've been to Adam 4 times myself and thinking about going there with my brother for new years. The latest in the year I've ben there was in November and it wasn't to to cold, mind you I am from Canada ha ha. It was still in the pluses so... I wouldn't have slept outside or anything tho:P. For free sleeping arrangements you could check out couchsurfing.org. And maybe skip Anne's house, that's just my opinion.
Good luck.

I'm not planning on staying in Amsterdam from more than a few days at most - 3 days in any town for me is a very long time, I like to keep moving and to see the smaller towns and the countryside more.
I have friends in Rennes and Augsburg that I'm going to see, and I'd really like to get in at least one or two days of snowboarding in, somewhere, if the snow is good for it, but outside of those things I have no solid destinations.
Will definitely check out the Anne Frank house and inevitably a coffeeshop or two (though weed is just about legal here in Alaska anyway, so the novelty might matter less than the headchange). And the Van Gogh museum would be awesome to see.
I'm prepared for the cold and the wet. It might still be miserable sometimes, but I'll be ready for it. I've been checking out the sleeping in airports idea - haven't done it yet but I'll definitely find the yoga room.
Is it worth bringing a tent, do you think? I usually do a lot of camping but it seems like it might be a little harder around France and Germany because of how crowded it is? I'm pretty resourceful in finding a good spot usually, but from what I've read, the weight of the tent may not be worth it (I pack really light, and only take what I absolutely need).
Thanks - I really appreciate the help!
