Hey whats up everyone, my name is Drew and Iam in Eau Claire, WI right now.

I've been on a few trips around the US and Mexico but it wasent till I went to Rio De Janerio last Feb. that I really got the Itch to travel. Iam planning on about a 2 Month solo Backpack trip around europe summer 2010. I sumbled on this site and have already found some great information and tons of people who also love to travel.

Also i've heard you can get a year long work visa in Australia, anyone know anything bout that?

Welcome Drew!

re: the Australia visa, what you need is a subclass 462 visa:

Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462)

There are basically 2 ways to go about it. You can either apply directly to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, or you can pay someone to help you. The most popular is to go through BUNAC:
Work Abroad, Volunteer Abroad and Teaching Overseas programmes - BUNAC

BUNAC helps you get your visa, and is supposed to help you get established once you arrive by giving info on getting bank accounts, job placement assistance, etc. They of course tack on a program fee. They also have programs for a bunch of other countries that offer work/holiday visas for US citizens that are worth a look as well.

So it's really just a matter of deciding if you want an agency's help or not. It minimizes the risk of you making a mistake (immigration processes are notoriously picky) and delaying your trip, but at an added cost. My personal opinion is...it's not rocket science, if you're the sort that can read everything thoroughly and pay attention to details you can do it on your own.

The age limit on the Australia visa work & holiday visa is 30 unfortunately (you must be 30 on the day you apply, you can be older when it's granted or used). New Zealand's visa is up to 35 though.

NZ!!

Ok i'm biased so maybe not. I would go for both if you have the time and money, NZ can be done in a few weeks if need be whereas OZ is so so so much bigger it really needs a decent amount of time especially if you don't want to shell out for flights as distances between places are huge!

Let me know if you have anymore specific questions!
