So, what's with a guy who ignores his own birthday thread?!
Seriously, thanks to everyone for the well wishes on my 46th (ack!) birthday. What a weird way to spend it, though. I woke up in Timbuktu, Mali, then we drove down to Dogon Country. It wasn't till about 10 pm that night, as we were sitting atop the roof of our, ahem "hotel," that it dawned on me that it was my birthday! I'd completely forgotten!!!
So, we ordered up a round of warm beers, because the hotel had no electricity -- Hell, the entire village had no electricity. We drank them, talked for awhile, and went to bed. I had a hard time getting to sleep, though, with all the goats and donkeys in the village making noise. So, sometime around midnight, I got out of my tent and just sat on the roof alone and looked at the stars. I picked out Orion, Sirius, the Big Dipper, Scorpio, etc. I saw a shooting star. The breeze had picked up, and when it finally cooled me down (it was hot inside my tent), I crawled back inside. I finally went to sleep...at least till the roosters started doing their thing a couple hours later.
I definitely thought of the Tpunk community while I was laying there trying to sleep. You guys have been with me for a long time, and have supported me all the way in my travels. I may not have a fancy car, big house, or other emblems of success in the Western world. But you guys make me feel like I'm some sort of rock star all the time for doing what I love to do -- seeing the world, and telling folks about it.
