Dio, I'll be staying at hostels for the first couple of months, so any recommendations that you can offer will be very much appreciated.
Mike, I'm very interested to hear about this "buddy pass" thing, sounds like it could be awesome!

Well basically for hostels I would stick to either the two yha downtown (westend and granville street locations) or the Samesun hostel on granville st. The other ones are pretty scuzzy...You will see a hostel called the cambie that has the cheapest bar ever...But i think you will get more decent rooms at the other places...i mean you could always visit the bar anytime you want just not sleep above it! Bare in mind that Granville street (where the yha and samesun are located) is the 'club' street so if you want something a tad quiter but still close by to everything I would recommend the yha on burnaby st i think it is? anyways I am a good person to know in van..unfortunatley im a concierge so its my job to know lots about the city..hehe..
Mike not sure exactly when i will be leaving van. right now it looks like beginning on nov. But i am down for a seattle meetup! would be sweet. yeah your buddy passes were great! I should look into using another one!!! he only thing I can say about meetups (longdistance ones) is that I need advance notice.

I'll see if I can post the buddy pass particulars here...there is a map that Jake posted a long time ago that I'd like to download and post up when I do.
The good thing about them is that they are flexible...you don't have to travel on the date you book it. There are no fees to change dates. Plus you can book them at the absolute last moment -- it doesn't matter. The price is based on which cities you're traveling between (or actually, which "zones").
The bad thing (besides your standby status), is that the fees all went up quite a bit about a month ago. So, I'll post that info, and you guys can look at it and see if it seems worth it or not.
So, if Jill is leaving in November, let's start brainstorming some dates for a Pac NW meetup...

Fark. I think the reality of this whole Canada plan has just started kicking in. None of this seemed like much of a big deal to me until just now. It's 9 days until I fly out and I only have 2 days left at work! I've had a few colleagues come over today and wish me luck with my trip and the rest of my life, somehow that's made it all seem a bit more real. I'll never admit this to anyone, but I'm actually kinda nervous.

Saying goodbye sucks ass...It is the scariest thing to throw away everything and move to the other side of the world...But you cant truly live til you throw away the security blanket right? Just remember once you get to your destination then you will realize why you left.
Hopefully the weather is good when you come! Its pouring rain now!!

Don't worry, you'll do fine. We all get nervous like that right before a trip (or at least I do). When I left for Africa I freaked out a lot because you hear so many scary things about Africa and all of a sudden I was going to be there for months on end?! But it was fine, I loved it, and I am so glad I went. You'll love it. BC is GORGEOUS! And for a Rock climber you really cant get any better than the rockies...I repeat: you'll love it
Good luck man!

there are two hostels across the street from each other on Robson. The Hi hostel is apparently much cleaner, nicer, etc but the Backpacker has a pub downstairs so it might be the better one to start with and then move over. Do not stay at any hostels on Pender, Hastings, or Main north of 2nd street.

^ oh yeah im with ya on that one..done that twice now! Its the most stressful thing in the world..
Good choice on hostel..They have a bar in the lobby, so its a good sociable place. I just didnt want you to get stuck in the oh so ghetto hostels that are in other parts of the city!
