Hello all,
My name is Matt aka Phat Matt and I am from Dallas, TX. Lived here all my life and at 21 I think this is the perfect time for me to get out of the states and backpack about a month or so. I am a professional DJ (club and mobile) I prefer spinning breakbeats, hip hop, house, etc... but I have and will play just about anything! I also work in an office building during the day doing pre-employment background checks for different companys. I dont have a car and am very much considering instead of getting a car, saving up that money for a trip to Europe. I am very open minded (straight but have a nice little secret fetish of my own) and always up for making new friends! I am planning on going it alone backpacking and hope to make lifelong friends along the way!
I want to start flying from Dallas to the UK and spending a few days in London, etc and from there go to Paris or A-dam and work my way through Netherlands, Germany, Switz, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, etc... I will be working on a budget like most everyone else who Backpacks. I know what I need to bring for the most part!
Questions I have are.....
Should I leave the laptop at home?
If I am going to be traveling a month from region to region with no exact itenirary, should I get the main Eurail Pass thats like $600 or individual passes? Whats the price difference?
Whats the best currency to bring? Travelers CHecks?
How much money after my flight should I expect to bring for travel, food, hostels, etc?
Thanks and I hope to hear back from people and make some new friends here,
Talk to you soon,
Phat Matt

First, Welcome to the boards!
For a one month trip, Leave the laptop at home, Europe is blanketed with internet cafes.
Eurail pass is most likely going to be cheaper. Compare to individual tickets at raileurope.com.
No currency is the best. All you need is an ATM card and maybe $100 USD cash (or travelers checks) just in case.
Drinking aside, I say 50-65 Euros a day is a good number for Western Europe. London is a budget killer and I say 40 pounds per day is the lowest I can do.
Hope this helps
Foo

Enjoy your trip, and I second leaving the laptop at home.

It is all a matter of timing. Certain times of day get more or less people. it is tough because of people being on so many different time zones here. I think too that a lot of people pop in, see nobody and leave, if you stick around for a bit other usually fill in at some point.

Welcome to the boards, PhatMatt !
I believe zleap is traveling and camping with a laptop. Says that a lot of places are equipped with wireless and it's cheaper than paying $3 an hour at internet cafe's.
Good luck!
