The political situation at the moment is tensed between the King and the opposition parties, including the Maoists. Soldiers and police officers are everywhere in Kathmandu and Pokhara, daily protests take place, national strikes that paralyze transport and services occur just about every week, and curfews that are intended for everyone, even the tourists, shorten your fun.

The tension increases daily as the upcoming election day get closer. This past week, tourists were caught in the middle of protests and were treated just like locals. One tourist had his arm broken.

French travel agencies have even cancelled their trips to the country for a few weeks.

Tourists aren't targeted, but since they are often stuck in their hotel, it is not the best time to travel to Nepal. This should all return to normal some time after the election.

Just wanted to let you know...

Thanks Esther, I've been keeping an eye on that what with my upcoming trip to the area. I'm *probably* not going to make it to Nepal, but I'm not 100% sure yet.

My dissertation tutor who is turning out to be a great help has researched her phd on nepal, its fascinating looking at her photos and her work, anyway she just got back from spending 5 weeks over christmas with her family (husband and 2 kids).

The scenery looks amazing...will have to see if i can get her to put some photos up for us all to have a look at
