Default Should I choose a hotel or a hostels?

A double beds room in a budget (1,2*) hotel costs around 80-100 euro.
And a private double beds room in a hostel costs round 80 euro.

Which one should I choose in general? I travel with my girlfriend somewhere around Amsterdam, Paris, Rome.

Thanks in advance.

Well, many hostels even though they have a private room, don't have private bathrooms. There are an exceptional few that do, but mostly... no. Most hotels have private ensuite bathrooms although there are a few that do not. I would verify and not assume that because it's called a hotel that it has an ensuite bathroom. So that's something to consider if you and your girlfriend want a private bathroom.

Other than that, in hostels you have more opportunities to mingle with other travelers who are open to mingle with you in return... you are not afforded the same thing at a hotel as a different crowd tends to stay in hotels. Sometimes more family oriented also.

It really depends on the type of experience and accommodations you want...

I'd say it all depends on the circumstances. I'm inclined to lean towards the hostel setup because a 1 star hotel is in my book a step down!

If they're roughly the same price, I'd definitely go for the hostel. It's so nice being able to meet fellow travelers. People travel for different reasons, but I've always enjoyed sharing my experiences with other travelers over a couple pints.
