has anyone been thru europe and avoided hostels all together? I'm not too into the hostel deal I'm more of a camping guy, I'm rather a clean person and if I'm going to lay in dirt and gross I'd rather it be straight from nature not second hand filth from joe blow, plus natures not going to leave anything crime scene investigaters deal with , i'm not sure if that makes sense but if it does sweet Is its possible to hit some big cities and avoid those places. Overall I'm just wondering if anyone has done it?
Thanks
Namaste

Well, I've stayed in a lot of hostels and have yet to come across anything that could be compared to a crime scene... Yeah, once or twice I was less than impressed with the sterility of bathrooms in certain establishments but overall I'd say that hostels are not nearly the cesspools of humanity that you're imagining they are.
That being said, I don't really have any information to offer about campgrounds. I do know that in Paris there is one in a nearby park but it's not entirely recommended because of the high likelihood of crime. *shrug*

Thats enough!
Everyday I hear people bashing Joe Blow!
Hes a good guy! Sure he could use a bath, and okay his choice in woman is a little off, but hey thats his choice! Maybe his manners are foul, he could be nicer to his friends and family and maybe he should go to a PETA meeting once and awhile, and he is a little on the cheap side and a bit of a moocher but Joe is a .... Hey, now that I think about it joe is an ASS!
Im with you!

Hostels are no worse than college dorms. In fact, some are cleaner. You do run into the dirty bathrooms now and then but you will get the same at campgrounds which are usually farther out from the city and you end up paying the same after commuting costs. Try a hostel and if you don't like it you can always whip out the tent the next night. Best of luck!

Yes I believe thats a good way to go and I was going to try one, but one question, from what I red on this site its best to reserve hostels online b4 you go... correct?
Would you say a good thing to do is just make reservations at hostels that will be on my path throughout the countries i'm going, take a look at them b4 I decide to stay and if there just too bad just leave? Is that possible, just make a bunch a reservation b4 going when I get there just check it out and if its too bad just say thanks anyway?
Qwardian that was funny as heck

Most places-- hostels and hotels-- have at least a 24-hour cancellation policy, sometimes 48. Meaning they'll charge your card that you used to make the reservation for one night's stay if you cancel after that. Just reserve something a couple days or however soon before you blow into town.
