i just booked a place in europe. ca'sa linger. i found it on hostelworld.com and it seems decent. i'll let u know if 2 weeks how it is. its pretty close to san marcos square. seems like all the cheap places are either campsites or located near the bus/train station. the more expensive hotels are located near the center of town by san marcos piazza. casa linger isnt super cheap but then again nothing is in venice. so i'll let u know.

we stayed at the hotel art deco, which was really nice (tiny, but so is everything in venice) - its run by a 'woman' called Christiana but my brother and I had our doubts about Christiana's feminity... It was a good location, right near the academia bridge and it was fairly easy to find the way around the area... not sure of the price range though as the bill was taken care of by mum & dad, but I don't think it was hugely expensive (for venice anyway)

Antico Capon. It was about 30 Euro a night. Right in the middle of the Campo Santa Margaritta. Good spot... very central location, great little tratorias, busy campo at night, young crowd...
There was another place I found near a good book store in Venice, but it was tough to find in the middle of the night (after a eight hour train ride from Schweinfurt). Bed and Breakfast di Frizzo Luigi. It's on the Calle Longa S. Maria Formosa in the city area of Castello. (number: 041.523.4060 or 340.680.0704- overseas numbers) The guy who told me about the place was the bookstore owner.

hows this for size,
groovy bar, regular shuttle bus, loads of other backpackers and the best night out in town ( Venice central is basically dead after the shops close), swimming pools and jaccuzzis, 2 litre giraffes of beer , 3 bed dorms with bathroom, all for €13.50 a night. Take a look at camping alba d'oro, a pretty good deal i'd say.

I second that! One of my favorite accommodations, for sure! The location was great, and they gave me a voucher in the morning to have coffee and a pastry at this beautiful cafe in the square.
