I'm gonna be in Ecuador for 5 months or so, first time doing the whole hostel thing, and I was wondering if you should usually bring your own towels to a hostel or if you can get them there. My pack for weekend trips outside of Quito (where I'll be living) isn't that big and I'm worried about space. Thanks for any help!

Some hostels provide towels but will charge a deposit. Since not all hostels do this I would reccomend going out and buying a quick dry towel. Any outdoor / surplus store will carry them and there generally really cheap.
Try to pick up a smaller towel as this will take up less room in your pack. Trust me...you'll hate using it but its all about space saving!!
No one really ever showers when backpacking anyways

I usually take a medium-sized PackTowl with me, and if I'm going somewhere beachy, etc. I take a (cheap but) decent proper towel. Doing the latter, I lose a t-shirt or two to make room for it, as a decent towel becomes a bit more of a priority!

I don't think i stayed in a single hostel that provided towels while i was in South America, so i would definately take my own if i was you. One of those quick dry travel towels would be fine if you don't plan on going to the beach.

As people above have mentioned, bring a pack towel from REI or EMS for hostel use - it folds up to nothing and works fine.
If you decide to go to the beach, you could always buy a beach towel on the spot. I would think that especially in places that offer cheap textile products like Central and South America, the towels should be cheap. I know they are in Asia, but haven't been to Cen or S America. I hate packing towels.......too big and bulky and smelly if they get salt water on them.

Normal towels NEVER dry in Central America... especially if it's rainy (which it often is) so I 100% recommend a travel towel (full size if you'd like) because they dry... I honestly had to throw my towel out because it was moldy and nasty after two weeks in Costa Rica.. $30 for a full sized towel at YHA, and I'm sure they have em at MEC or REI
