we ended up staying in a hotel in Venice which was more money than we wanted to spend....if we went there again we'd book something on the mainland. It's only 10 minutes to the islands...just a thought. I hear the camping there is great too.

I stayed at a hotel as well. It was called Hotel Ai Tolentini

It was reasonably priced, but we also had 3 people crammed into the one room...so that helped with the cost.

Don't give up yet!

I stayed at Ostello Santa Fosca and it was less than $20 US a night when I went. Had a nice courtyard and was clean. Also stayed at a Bed & Breakfast called Livia Oliva and that was quite nice and a pretty good price if I remember correctly.

I remember I stayed at Hotel Marty I think its called.... Was very close to the train station.. its located on the left right before you cross over the first canal bridge from the train station... It cost less than 20$ and you stay in what seems like some lady's attic.. she hangs sheets around each bed for privacy and charges less than $20 per bed.. Was a cool place I thought.

I stayed in an apartment-type place called Antico Capone (not sure about the spelling). It provided free internet, and coffee and a pastry and this little cafe nearby, and the man who ran it was really nice. I'm not sure how we got it, because my friend found it, but I'd definitely recommend it! It was located in Santa Margarita which was about 10-15 minutes walk from the train station and close to San Marco square. Santa Margarita was also where a lot of popular bars were - I would just go to the bathroom in our place instead of the lines at the bars!
