Just a quick question about leaving your backpack in a hostel while you go out exploring for the day...

I have a daypack that Ill have my valuables (camera etc) in and of course my money belt with important documents. So I will be leaving no valuables in the hostel.
Nobody is going to steal a backpack with dirty clothes in right? Would there be a point in putting my spare combo lock on it, or would that make people think something good is in there and then steal the whole thing.

Tell me your experiences. Cheers kids

YO! B)

I remember walking into my room at the first hostel that i ever stayed at and being shocked. I saw a suitcase wide open and no one around. I was like what is going on here. Someone would just leave their stuff laying out like that!? But that's what does happen. People leave their stuff out and nothing *usually* happens to it. I would never leave my pack open though. I make sure it's closed and sometimes I put my little zipper locks on. Depending on the seediness of the hostel sometimes I would chain my backpack to the bunk bed ( I brought along a bike lock chain). But I would always cover the chain cuz I didn't want my dormmates to think that i didn't trust them!! I've never heard of anyone stealing an actual backpack from a room. Just as long as you take your valuables with you, ya should be fine.

i agree. you should be fine as long as you take your valuables. but it sure would suck if someone did make off with your bag - even if it was just a bunch of dirty clothes.

better safe then sorry. i say lock up your bag, but like dio, hide the chain.
