I'm just curious as to whether or not churches could provide a place to sleep for a night or two.... I was thinking if I couldn't find a camping site etc. and found a church if you paid them would they let you stay? Has anyone done this,I'd rather stay in churches than hostels myself, cleaner and so much safer I would have to think.

Some monasteries have guest accommodations, and some churches have guest houses, but in my experience the later are more expensive than hostels - though generally spotless. I don't know about individual churches themselves, they might be able to direct you to places to stay, but expect to pay or help with their work in exchange (ie. maybe helping in a soup kitchen or something).

I doubt it, I think there is an old catholic law where you can ask for sanctruary, you could say the devils after you. At worst then they would send you to the ceile (nut) house for a good nights rest full to the eyeballs of the finest medication the state can offer.

I know there is a hostel in Amsterdam called 'The Shelter' and it is run by Christians, but anyone can stay there. Unfortunately thats the only info I can provide.

I don't know about churches per se, but a few of my friends did stay in a convent for a few days last summer in Paris (the name escapes me right now). They said it was great - cleanest they have ever seen, awesome breakfast included, etc. Their only complaint was that they had to be back by 10pm of they would be locked out. Basically - not somewhere you'd want to stay if you wanted to party all night.
