Okay so I leave in two weeks, and the only place I have booked anything is in Pamplona. Do I need to book stuff ahead of time or can I get off the plane and go find a place to stay?

Book in the big major cities or be prepared to do a lot of walking and/or sleeping on the ground.

I used to travel on a whim and just walk up and get a room without a reservation. But my last trip to Europe, I was turned away 3 times for a room because of lack of space. You certainly take your chances if you do not reserve.

I've had good luck booking a day or 2 before while I'm on the road. it really sucks to be stuck in an internet cafe trying to find a place to stay because you didn't book ahead of time.

If you want to stay at the top places then reserving is recommended heavily by me. The top places usely fill up at least a week befroe hand.

I'm goin' in high season and booked ahead. I'm glad I did even if my plans change. Some of the hostels are really close to full and we're a month out still! I would have rather just gone without, but on my first trip I don't really want to ultra-rough it quite yet. LOL!

DO IT. I got back from Europe 3 weeks ago and I would have been SCREWED without them.
Happy Trails!

From what backpackers have said about previous years is that reservations weren't completely needed. One guy said last year he just showed up at Flying Pigs and and was able to book for 3 nights, with no problem. This year he went back and they were booked soild for the next 2 1/2 weeks. I don'tknow if internet booking just boomed this year or what but it sounds like if you want to stay somewhere in particular you need to book ahead.

Hi,
I just got back from Europe and had a bit of a wake-up call after not being able to find a lot in Dublin for a weekend. After that experience, my friend and I booked everything ahead. While it limited us a bit, we were still able to cancel with 24 hours notice. That being said, in at train stations there were tons of hostel runners who actually had good places at reasonable prices, which you can keep in mind.
