I wish I could help you. I have never heard of or stayed at Orbithotel. I have however stayed at the HI hostel in santa monica. I don't recommend it. I mean I guess it would be fine as a place to sleep but the staff was not friendly and they had WAY too many rules for a place like that.

What's your primary goal in LA? to meet cool people and have a good time?

I would suggest staying at the Banana Bungalow i stayed at the one in santa barbara and loved it. Make sure you reserve your spot there before you go. But seriously for 15 bucks a night right in the middle of Hollywood with busses going to the beaches and a bus that goes to Santa Barbara (which I highly recommend if you want to see a better part of cali) how can you beat it?

I was just cruising around Banana Bungalows site and realized that their hostel IS in the Orbithotel

So judging from my experience at their santa barbara branch, yea you should be good!

I used to live right by Banana Bungalow. The problem I have with it is that it's right off Highland Ave in a stretch of road that's sort-of-highway and sort-of-road. Meaning there's no sidewalk anywhere near there, and walking in/out of that place with LA traffic flow can be crazy - I can't count how many times I've nearly clipped backpackers walking up the hill to the place. Other than that, I don't know squat about it

[EDIT: Never mind - I just checked Jake's link and apparently they've moved to Melrose - good location!]

Two of the hostels I've liked in LA are the Venice Beach Cotel - not grand, but it's got a cool bar and loads of cool travelers to hang with. If you want something on the nicer side on the beach, there's the Cadillac Hostel.
