Jive pretty much covered it. If the Irish bartender is still working there, buy him a basket of chips from the local chip shop and he'll be your friend all night. (i.e. being served after they close!)
Get to the happy room before 10am if you want to eat.. Note that the little Nescafe machine is all you can drink until 10!! The stuff is pretty decent - take advantage of it.
Eating decent meals around there isn't cheap, but ask the front desk about the Italian place up the street. I think we ate there 3 times - good stuff. The coffeeshops in the immediate area are crap, save for Kandinsky, just due south and to the left, because they have kickass cookies.
There's a late bar around the corner (south and west, toward Damrak, I think) that has a red door/storefront. It doesn't look like a bar during the day. Great crowd, lotsa pretty girls, relatively good prices.
