I've read about people sleeping in airports and train stations, but is that really a possibility. If you just walk in an airport/train station )let's say Westtern/Northern Europe) without having a ticket can you just find a spot and sleep, with out getting kicked out?
In general, the areas where it's acceptable to sleep in airports are at/around the gates, which are past the security area, and you'll need a ticket to get that far in much of the world nowadays. If you're stuck at Heathrow, it's nice that they have showers in the International Transfers area.
As for train stations, the rules seem to vary by city. But even if it's allowed, because of less security at the stations than at airports, they're a much more likely place to get rolled.

that is a little less direct, but they have several stories of bedding down in random hotels. interesting stuff.
