my friend and i are about to leave for months of travel on a VERY VERY VERY low budget (all the more exciteing i guess! hah) and ive read in all the travel books that camping is the cheapest way to go. but non of them bring up the fact of camping in dec on weather! is it possible? im a good camper and can tolorate alot. but is this just too much?

this is far fetched and i bet i know the answer already but do think it possible to camp without a tent as well? just bags and a tarp? i ask this because im worried about the weight of my pack.

what do you guys think? ill be traveling all around europe for the first time and have noo idea

Read Vagabonding in Europe and North Africa by Ed Buryn. Great book. Full of hippie-isms like "avoid travel agents like they was the cops" and so forth. He talks about camping and he talks about winter travel. I skimmed over the camping, but I am sure he talks about winter camping.

Uhm... I am one to come up with ideas that make my family scratch their heads, so I dont have much room to talk, but do you think this is really really a great plan? Your first time, no tent, camping in the winter, limited funds.... HAve you looked into maybe getting a job and haning out for a while, if money's an issue??

yeah I'm with bellelass....I really cannot imagine my first time in the winter camping. Summer would be another story, but I think you could be pretty miserable. Here's a suggestion: www.couchsurfing.com

It's a great website where people host you for free for a night, a couple nights, whatever. I haven't been able to actually stay with anyone yet on it but if I had known about the site when I was in Europe this past summer I definitely would have (and saved a ton of money!)

2 quick things:

While I admire your willingness to do what it takes, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

1) It rains a TON in Europe. Even if you can manage to stay warm in your bag without a tent, if nothing else, you'll be soaked and won't be able to sleep. Sightseeing sucks when you're tired and cranky. Get a tent at least.

2) Campsites, while cheap, are not free and you'll then have to factor in cost and time lost by being so far away from the action. Bigger the city, the farther away you are. I stayed in campsites in Venice and Florence this summer and both places were 45 min away from town. Maybe checkout hostel prices first, then camp as a last resort.

Good luck,
Jason

know you posted this awhile back, but if you are keeping tabs, i will be camping in western europe in winter, too. although, like jw1313 said, especially in rural areas campsites cost as much as hostels(10 to 15 lbs, euros) but it's my understanding that asking permission to camp on someones property is nt usually a big deal. i wouldn't build a fire, but maybe that's just me. anyway, i am going solo, so if you want to maybe keep in touch and meet up to exchange newfound ideas and experiences i'd like that. (blackseun@travelpunk.com) good luck, and don't worry, we must not be as crazy as we thought.

Alright, I also know this was posted two months ago, but in case you haven't gone yet, get a skivy(??) tent! It's like a 1-2 person pop up tent that is so small and you can find them about 2 lbs. If you look at sportsmans guide or ebay you can find em for 20 - 30 bucks.
