We are traveling to Seattle in September, family of 4. Looks like there are 3 hostels in Seattle. Has anyone stayed there before? any recomendations or warnings???? Thanks...

Hi there, I live in Seattle. :) I know of two hostels that are downtown, not sure about the third one... I recommend the HI Hostel downtown at Pike Place Market-- I think it's on Western Ave. There is another one close by called the Green Tortoise, but the street out front is a little skanky with lots of loiterers. You're much better off with the HI hostel.

Interesting, has anyone stayed in a hostel in the States? How are they? And how many are there? Do they have a lot of "locals" (aka "bums") shackin' up there or not? What are the rates like?

We'll be spending a nite in Roswell, NM - any hostels there?

Maybe I'll try staying in some in the NW when I make that trip? What's a good US hostel site?

yeyordna-- I found that 3rd hostel you're talking about, the HI on Vashon Island... If you plan on having a car and don't mind a $12 ferry fare plus passengers for each time you leave the island, it would be okay. In other words, unless you ONLY plan to visit Vashon Island while you're here, don't bother because it will be prohibitively expensive.

voyd-- there are a bunch of U.S. hostel listings on tpunk! I didn't see one for Roswell though. Bums are NOT allowed to crash at U.S. hostels; you *must* be from out of town to stay there and the prices are about the same as what you would find in Europe. At least this is the case in Seattle.

A lot of people that apply for jobs with me have just moved here and stay at the hostels til they find a place to live on their own, and almost all of them have told me that the H.I. downtown is better.

^ Ah yes, deurr. Cool!

There's not that many and most are pretty small though, it seems. I wonder how booked up they usually are...?

 Thanks for the input. As we plan to go to as many Red-Sox games that weekend, the ferry $ might get pricy...sounds like the HI downtown is the best so far.. :)
