i have just had the worst night in a dorm ever. it started out as a fine evening, just me and another guy in the dorm, nice and peacful. then at about 2:30 am a group of 5 Chileans show up and turn on all the light and then proceed to start talking at the top of thier lung to eachother. usually in a dorm if thier are people sleeping you are quite and considerate, at least that has been my experiance till now. for a half hour they just sat in the dorm and talked to each other, very loudly. they didnt even bother leaving the dorm to continue the conversation. when they finally left at about 3am i got a few hours sleep. but they came back at about 6am and what did they do? they turned on all the fucking lights and were laughing a joking around with eachother. this went on for another half hour. by this time me and the other guy were wide awake. he eventually got so pissed off he left the dorm and slammed the door. he then proceeded to enter loudly and slam the door yet again. he did this a few more times in a vein attemt to give them a taste of thier own medicine. he then turned all the lights on and left the door wide open and everytime he would walk by he would make some sort of loud noise. i was caught in the middle of some sort of noise war. anyway i eventually got up and now i am on no sleep and writing this message. i need your sympathy.

Mabye they just didn't see anyone else in the room trying to sleep. You should have confronted them about it. Most people will realized that they have pissed you off and go elsewhere. If they don't, then you have run across part of the small percentage of people in the world who suck at life and its better to avoid them at all costs.

that sux..that kind of happened to me as well. Just me and my friend in a dorm room and they entered the room at like 2 in the morning and turned on the lights and were yaddling about..thank gawd though they eventually went to bed. I think it's so rude. ppl have to follow hostel "rules" When u enter a room and the lights are out then KEEP THEM OUT! unless you have a bunk bed with a little light. That's why it;s good to always bring a flash light. When u know that your going to be coming in late then make sure that all your toiletries are all ready out of your bag. Same goes for if you have to leave early the next morning. Make sure that your bag is somewhat packed up already. g'luck getting some sleep!

Eesh, throwing some sympathy over to you jteichgrab!!
I think I would have snapped and yelled at them! When people piss me off, I can't help but lose my temper mmm... fairly easily.
And if that didn't work, then I'd do the same to them, like the other guy did, revenge is a must have sometimes.
Or....If all else fails, I would have complained about them to the people who run the hostel.

I need to bring earplugs next time. Then again, that could backfire if I miss my alarm and oversleep! Doh! People just need to be more damn considerate!

I have a bit of experience wearing earplugs (BF snores) and through trial and error I found the best way to make sure you get up is a cell phone on vibrate. I try to tuck it up next to my neck and it hasn't failed me yet.

in being considerate to others in the room, alarms are an issue. people get up at tdifferent times and the easiest way to make sure wake up QUIETLY is to get a cheap used pager, which you get anywhere for so cheap, and just use the vibrate alarm. where shorts to bed or something with pockets and keep it in there. done that for a while now and it never fails.

Or just drink a lot of water before you go to bed. Nah just kidding.
It's a good thing I read this I never would have thought...
Too bad about your night jteichgrab, that really bites. I might've ended up sleeping in the hall or just yelling at 'em (I can be a real biatch when I'm woken up). But I'm amazed at how calm you stayed...really.
