here's the thing. i'm looking at hostels in Rome and have pretty much settled on the Yellow. most others come off as, and blatantly advertise themselves as, PARTY spots which is not really what i'm looking for. i definately want a place that's going to be a good time and lively is no problem, i just don't need a binge drinking frat house, lots i want to see during the day too. Got any recommends?

Well, I stayed at the Yellow Hostel, and it's not any more or any less of a party scene than other hostels. They have happy hour time and beyond that, it's pretty much the same as others, in terms of people hanging out drinking, watching tv, chitchatting or checking the Internet. They have free Internet and a deal with a local laundrymat, which will give you a discounted rate for washing your stuff there, plus 20 mins. of free internet at the laundry site, and a coupon for a free chai at the local India restaurant.

I heard that Fawlty Towers is nice too. I also stayed at the Alexandro (sp?) Palace, there are two of them, and they weren't bad either. The showers at both Yellow and Alexander are small and kinda gross, but you can make do. A bit smelly overall, but I've heard of worse stories about other hostels. I stayed at both b/c I wanted to try it out, maybe you can do the same.

well i stayed at yellow past summer, a couple blocks from termini. free internet, no curfew, no lockout, full kitchen, free dvd movies. grocery store right around the corner. they have pub crawls almost every night, a bar, lounge, cool staff. it is not a loud place. i thought it was a good place.
oh i heard that freedom traveller is a very fun hostel as well. check it out

You have to stay at Gulliver's House. Not a party place at all and the couple who runs it, Simon & Sara, are really helpful and cool. Free breakfast. We met the best people at this place. www.gullivershouse.com

It's located off Via Nazionale, a few blocks away from Plaza Republica
