My fiancé and I are planning to drive through Italy this summer, going through Rome, Florence, Venice and maybe Cinque Terre.
My question is, do hostels charge you on a per room basis or on a per person basis? For example, the Al Portico in Venice sounds great and they offer a double bed for €55..is that per person? Because €55 for the two of us would be a dream come true! That said, would it be cheaper for me to go scout cheap hotels (that most probably have free parking) that would charge me for the room rather than the number of people?
Any other suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks!

Most places in Europe will charge you prices per person. $55 x 2=$110. When I walked into hostels/hotels on my first trip, I always asked for privates. If all they had was a room with two beds, I had to pay for both beds in order to get the room for myself. So I ponied up the funds and chose this route several times.
For example, this popular hotel Hotel Des Artistes has a price of $62.50 for a 2 bed private which comes $125 total. But, they also have a one bed private for 2 people for the same price.
