I know there is a forum for this, but the last posts were in 2005 and contain no actual information. Anyone that has been to St. Pete recommend a good hostel that will get me a letter of invitation?

we talking st. petersburg russia? if so, go for Cuba Hostel...you will find it up to the usual backpacker standards and then some

I recommend to stay at Friends hostels - a chain of hostels in St.Petersburg, called after the famous TV show. In 2012 Lonely planet travel guide visited Friends hostel and considered it to have spotless rooms, friendly staff and great location there website says. Quite cool, isn't it? I booked a room for my german friends there are they were very satisfied: small money for good quality, they said. I may also advise to look at hostelworld and other sites of the kind - you'll see huge lists of budget accommodation options. but don't forget to read reviews before booking!
