Me again

Question about pre booking hostels

I have booked my first place (the yellow in Rome), however after that i wont know dates or where im going beyond a rough idea, am i going to be ok just booking the day before/same day

is it difficult to find a place to sleep if i just turn up?

and for the recommended places, (wombat, flying pig etc..) will i need to pre book these, i assume i would since i guess they fill up fast (had to go for a 6 bed room because i couldn't get one of the days in the 12 bed in the one ive booked which makes me think they will fill quick) or do they often get late cancellations and have rooms spare?

Thanks

Those hostels that you mentioned should definitely be booked in advanced as they are very popular.

There are a couple of posts on here that talk about the current state of availability at hostels being scarce, including Offhegoes blog.

If you don't know where you'll be then you really don't have any choice but to wing it.

If you plan some key dates ahead of time, then definitely book ahead and wing the days in between.

IMHO

Yeah thats what i thought

i think ill try and plan a rough date for those hostels, after all its only going to be a 10 euro or so cancelation fee i guess

So another quick question:

If you are cancelling a reservation in a hostel are they normally ok with you cancelling (as long as its 2 days before your due) or do they get funny and still want to charge you a night/extra fees etc..?

I assume it is different depending on the hostel really

Generally if you book with Hostelworld you'll just lose your 10% deposit.

From my experience last year you will have a lot more trouble winging it it Western Europe than you will in the East. Personally I'd sat just go with the flow for starters, then if you can't find a place one night, just mark it down as a learning experience and book earlier next time.

When will you be traveling? This summer? If so, I wouldn't wing Western Europes popular cities/hostels.

But thats just me...

Last two weeks of July and the first two weeks of August are said to be the busiest time of summer travel each year.

Again, many people are posting that lots of hostels are fully booked up, so prolly the sooner you book, the better.

Travel will ease up mid Sept as everyone heads back home for the start of the school year so winging it should be fine.
