Default Wanders Inn New York - Help needed

My school is planning on a educational visit to New York with approximately 40 14-15 year olds. Our previous hotel has now become to expensive to justify the trip and so the second option being run by the company is the Wanders Inn on the Upper East side.

I have only previously stayed on the West...I have slight reservations because of the lack of subway facilities about the East. Has anyone stayed in this hostel? Would it be safe enough for kids to stay in..don't forget I am trying to get this past parents.

Thanks in advance,

Briley

The wanders inn I looked up is on the west side. 257 west 113 st. I've never been there, but its a little more uptown than I would like to stay, although it is close to the park.

I also wouldn't be too keen on staying that far uptown, but that's just me. Especially teenagers. Is there any way you could stay somewhere closer to midtown and possibly the school could do some fundraising to help pay?

I mean, the chances of anything happening are slim...but that isn't the greatest area.

I don't think 113th street is that far north, it's near the north end of Central Park. I just looked up the 5-line schedule and it would take 20 minutes to get from 125th street to Bowling Green (which is the far south end of manhatten, like if you were doing to Ellis Island or the Statue of Liberty).

Based on that I would guess things like Times Square, the theater district, and rockefeller center would be about 10 minutes, and the museums are mostly on the upper west side so you'd be close to those. Like you said the trickiest part is that there's no east-west subway to cross to the westside for a while. The busses are good and frequent but you'd definitely have to split up to get 40 people through central park to the westside if you did the museums there.

As for safety, it's a little hard to say. The upper east side is where all the super rich people live, you're most at risk of Robert Downy Junior falling off tha bandwagon and making a scene or something. But that is also pretty far north, close to Harlem, so I would guess you're a few blocks outside that uber-wealthy area.

Really, in manhattan these days I don't think there's anywhere that is unsafe.

And what kind of fancy school do you work at that can afford to send 40 kids that far?! I think the only field trip I ever had in school was to a water treatment plant

Remember for them, everything is half price hahaha. It probably cost the same $$$ to go to New York City as it does to go to that water treatment plant, after exchange.

A lot of the museums are on the Upper East Side as well. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim, the Whitney, and some others. I think the only one on the UWS is the Museum of Natural History.

Also, those subway times seem pretty optimistic from my years of experience riding the NYC Metro. Even the express takes a little longer to get from 125th downtown. I dont mean to say its not convenient or doable, but I would allow for more travel time.
