Ok, so I'm used to Tokyo prices, sort of used to London prices, and I know living there in the spring is going to be expensive....
This guy from my school who is also going has found a place. There would be 4 of us in a 2 bedroom place. It's in Zone 1, a 5 minute walk from my school and the closest tube station is Tottenham Court Road. I know this is a perfect location but 175 pounds/week to share a room (and live with with 3 other Americans in my program) Is this an ok price or does anyone think it's possible for me to do better (ie my own room, furnished) around the same location, and preferably with locals? I'm thinking I can do better, or maybe I'm just anti-social... I don't think I'll be relegated to a cardboard box on the corner; these things always seem to work out and I'm so non-committal to everything.
Thanks

£175 sounds like an extortionate amount to pay for a share in london!! But then again if your nearest tube is tottenam court road then the place is slap bang in the middle of london city and that = prime real estate hence the high price would be realistic.... also your not gonna get many real locals in this area!!! Just tourists and rich people!!
To be honest you should think of living a bit further out. places like willesden or kilburn are pretty much a 10-15 minute tube ride away from tottenham court road and you probably can expect to pay between £60-£80 a week for a room in a share house.

definately gumtree..... Great website......thats what i was using before i found a place (i live near london not in it)
as a rough guide, 300 to 400 clams a month for a house share in london (bills included). 60 quid a weeks sounds quite optimistic, but i hope i'm wrong and you find a place......but in a house share the place is not important....its the people. Good luck and if you need a beer with someone, don't hesitate to ask!

Considering the location that doesn't sound too bad. I'm looking at 600 quid a month but that's in zone 3.

if you want to live with locals then you dont want to be living around central london!! most working or middle class people live in zones 2/3 -5....
By the way I realise this is a huge generalisation but it is a good rule of thumb. And I should know having lived here in london all my life!!!

Hmmm good point about locals not living there...
Ok, well, let's put it this way; i'd prefer non-Americans. I have been known to like a good Aussie or Kiwi, among other foreigners.
I think I can do better; gumtree looks promising. Thanks!

You can definitely do better. That area around the University is a student area, you can find a lot cheaper places. You might have to arrive first, but there are places. I knew a guy who lived in an apartment right off of Russel Sq that paid 70 pound a week for a whole apartment. You cant live in the sudent housing buildings? Im sure they are fairly reasonable.

if you want aussies or kiwis then they have pretty much taking over areas of west london. For instance a stroll round earls court would leave you feeling like your in the southern hemisphere!!
As a rule West london is a lot nicer then east london and South london has more of a village type feel to it, North london is cool and gives you great access to venues like wembley, as well as being very easy to get into town from.

Nah, there's no student housing for law students. And even if there were, I don't think I can handle a dorm like situation with 18 year olds running around (no offense to any 18 year olds here).
Hmm, decisions, decisions....though I basically feel like I can't commit to anything without getting there and seeing it.
